I'm looking for teaching material on billiard ball manips without the usual s***l, other than Arthur Buckley's "Principles and Deceptions", which I am currently working through. Please let me know any titles, even if they are out of print or rare.
Thank you, Paul |

Marc DeSouza had a great video in which some moves were taught. His routine is something that will make you want to perform this stuff. "Prize Winning Stage Magic" is the name of the video.

Marc is a good friend and indeed he has some great moves using no S***l. Also the McBride videos viover off on some no shell moves as well as the old book "it's easier than you think" by Geoffry Buckingham".

If Im not mistaken, Romaine's DVD Monarch of Manipulators is specifically no shells or gimmicked balls.

There is a whole library of great material to keep anyone working for years here.
You have been given the McBride (DVD) reference, the Romaine DVD reference, the Buckingham Book (there is also a DVD showing his no shell routine) and the Marc DeSouza video. About all I can offer is a short four ball routine by Jack Delvin. It is on his Delvin into Magic lecture at the London Magic Circle video (found on sale at Stevens). The routine is very easy to learn, included some nice (and impossible) appearances of the balls and color changes. Starts barehanded and ends with four differently colored balls. It can be performed fairly close up. Good luck building a routine and have fun performing it!

Unfortunately, the only one that will know you are not using a shell is you. I found that real professional magicians use magic and equipment that makes the performance the best they can offer in entertainment.
I have known several magicians that worked out routines with no shell. Yes, there is always something missing from the routine. Or, added that makes for over handling. In the end when performing for the real world they went back to the shell. Please, don't announce to your audience that your routine does not use a shell. Yes, I have been to magic conventions that the MC announced such a thing. |

Thanks guy's, I'll look all of those up, I see Jack Delvin every now and then so I'll have a chat with him about it too.
The only reason I'm not using a shell is because I can't find a set of balls I like with a shell. They just don't make 'em like they used to. That plus watching Roy Davenport manipulating the balls is so magical, and not everything he does could be worked with a shell in hand. Paul |

Paul, if you have access to Jack Delvin then you have access to a private tutorial to learn a good, strong, visual, magical, and technically easy (not self-working) routine. I use his routine fairly often.

If you want the most straight-forward no-shell routine, get harry riser's Book which inlcudes a great no-shell for the multiplying golf balls-with pocket work, no clips and good reasons for each reach.

Roy Davenport does not use any shells at all. This is his 'hook' for his act. No gimmicks, just holders or droppers.

Don`t forget Ron McMillan and his book or video on ball manipulation. His ball holder is very clever. Richard Ross and Ger Cooper also performed without shell. If you have a chance to see Alpha video from his early days you will see one of the best routines ever without shell. It is an 8 balls routine.

I just came across an item that makes an excellent ball dropper. It's called "My Caddy" clips to your waistband, designed to hold a tennis ball but will hold a billiard ball snug, works perfect. Several lined up along your belt or saftey pin anywhere you like. "My Caddy" is made of metal, there's a more common plastic kind out there that won't work with a slick surface. Hope you find useful.

Good advice there wmhegbli, But I have seen some great manipulating ball acts that are currently being done without a shell. It really depends on how you sell it. I hope to some day remove the shell off my routine...for I feel, I can make a grand finnish...cheers chris

For no-shell work, you have to check out anything by Gregg Webb. If I recall correctly, Greg far preferred no-shell work, and even when he did use a shell, he used it in unorthodox and different ways. Very refreshing. I think you can get his e-books online.

One of the most graceful for billiard balls without a shell is the Alan Wakeling Book.

Agreed. For example, a nice "no shell" effect is Gregg's "S'Ballbound" color change. Also see his "no shell" multiplying b-balls. |

In Greater Magic there are routines with no gaff, Also, in The Feints and Temps of Harry Riser, by Ed Brown, there are several.
