I fried a few skeptics by using a blindfold while doing the PCT.

Another is a delayed peek(a peek after tearing and discarding the pieces minus center). I once loved a CT with a peek during tearing(CT/PDT) because it seemed economical. Now I love a CT with a delayed peek(CT/DP). A shortcoming of CT/PDT is that a performer is holding a paper too long. Keep in mind that you, from the spectators point of view, are just tearing a paper. No more, no less. Your body posture secretly tells specs. Videotape and watch your CT. Watch your rigid shoulder. You are very carefully tearing and peeking. On the other hand, CT/DP is very clean looking from your specs. Tearing, tearing, and discard(like counting 1,2,3). And you are done. You are palming the torn center. The rest is your presentation. When tearing, never watch your paper(hands). Keep watching(talking to) specs. However, it depends on what you desire. Everyone is under different needs. My priority is a paper torn smoothly and discard ASAP. Thus I love CT/DP. The important thing is NOT what you do, but what specs see/conceive. Happy tering, @Jay@ |

--------------------------- Excellent points Jay. I have just begun to do the CT/DP for variety and am excited about the possiblities. Time will tell of course but walking away after discarding the pieces (apologizing for miscommunication about how to write it) and giving them an opportunity to write it any old way on even their paper has been very strong for me. Plus it give me a much longer time to r**d bad writing rather then the traditional p**k. My pockets are already set up for billets (Q n A) already so it comes as second nature. Of course, each CT has its advantages. With PCT, the spectator can recreate the pieces to see the name. Very few times has this happened to me but, if I leave the pieces on the table like I did last night, its an invite.

Greeat thread on the PCT and CT. I for one am a HUGE fan of just the CT. I like to get the center and get ride of the paper some how. Then I can pull out a small note pad and lay the center on it and start to guess what they wrote.Have them tell what they wrote and then turn the pad around and there it is.This is almost like the Q&A that RO does with a Clip board but for walk a round. Also you don't even need to look anywhere toward the paper when tearing it up.I guess what ever works best for you would be the best one to you.

With the right misdirection and movement you can make it seem like you never looked at the paper even though you did. "Hold your hand like this" so you can fairly put all the pieces into their hands. Or "pass me that can" to get rid of the paper .When I do my tear people usually check later to see if all the pieces are there.

I am so use to leaving the paper on the table with PCT. However, I have used PCT extensively and very seldom do they pick up the pieces to look. A lot of times I leave the pieces in their hand balled up and have them concentrate. Then I being a good host, have them drop them in my hand after the reveal and toss them in a rubbish can. Don't want to litter:)
Heck, why cant the same be done with the pieces of the CT? I know I can burn them but why not help the customer out. Why should they be stuck with the pieces and having to stand up and toss them Can't wait for next week gigs:)

The coolest way I've ever seen it performed was Ted Lesley.
There's another german guy called "Wonderman Fred". I personally don't like his way of presentation but he came out with a book that's called "Return To Center". I don't know if it is available in english. You'll have to check. Many different techniques & routines in there...

As mentioned, 13 Steps has some wonderful ideas. Still a mystery if Mr Corinda is still alive or not.
Also, you don't have to just have the circle written. You can have directions on the paper also. That way there will be writing on most of the pieces after torn. Anyways, his version of drawing a box instead of a circle is great.

I really like this topic. We all love the CT in its many forms.
Everyone has their own preference and its great that we can all share. I was using the PCT for about a year. It was the first "peek during tearing" CT I learned. I love Richard Osterlind's thinking and handling behind the PCT. I wanted a tear that I could do with business cards or index cards that appeared natural. I also wanted to make it easier to tear the paper without glancing at the hands. I wanted the paper to appear to be torn to tiny bits before the peek and tearing one more time is only an option. If I wanted to, I could steal the center and read it later. I created Think Pink to meet this criteria. I'll probably never steal the center because I find it natural to look at this tiny pile of pieces at my finger tips to either hand them to the participant or to tear one final time or both. Of course while you are tearing you are looking into their eyes and describing pieces of their thought via cold reading. Nobody cares about the pieces of paper anymore, they've become insignificant. I like to draw a line with an X on top- like in the PCT.

I think the CT in any version is the most powerful effect in mentalism, hands down.
I have treasured the looks on people's faces just after the reveal and if I had a photo of each and everyone of them, I'd never loose one bit of interest in this field ever again during those tough times I sometimes have.

Hi,
Hocus Pocus. BTW, have you checked Barry Richardson's business card CT in Act Two, if you are so interested in CT? Quote:
My pockets are already set up for billets (Q n A). Just out of curiosity, which kind of Q&A are you practicing in the real world? This is my (not-folded-up)QUESTION, but if you don't want to give an ANSWER, just ignore. |

I only have Act I but I use Q n A from Annemans. Osterlind gives a nice demo also on one of his DVDs.

I am fairly new to Mentalism so I am treading softly, and learning a great deal in my studies an also at the Café'.Some of the suggestions etc. made on this thread are quite interesting and informative.Condensing some thoughths on the CT.
I like the idea of having some other writing on the paper;brief instructions etc. This to me limits and confuses re-creation. The extra tear metioned above makes sense to me. The use of a post-it note is something I am going to explore..this could really GUM things up..hehehe |

I think Michael misunderstood(that or I am), I believe it was menioned that them trying to reconstruct it was a GOOD thing because it can prove that all the pieces were there and nothing was stolen away....
So not a bad thing that needed to be covered(he was already ripping up the peek piece, he wasn't worried about them discovering method, but fine with them looking so they could put the pieces back together and make sure all were there). Hope that clears things up... Finally Think Pink is awesome and everyone should check it out... it has a different feel than PCT which is more laid back and just calmly tearing pieces and waiting for peek, whereby PCT is a quick and clean method when you just want to tear and peek... I'd definatly check them out because not only will many have different preferences, but many will also want to use both(or more) at different situations... |

With the PCT give the packet an extra rip before handing them back to the spectator. More difficult to recreate. I also use post it note; they all stick together.
----------------------------------- But with PCT it makes no difference if they recreate. All the pieces are there. With the CT however, the pieces are not there. They recreate CT and you have a mess. Or did you mean CT? My bad then. Smaller pieces are difficult to torch if you do the burn. Also they are harder for me to handle without dropping a few (suspcion for layman for some reason). I have a stage show coming up later this month. Im thinking PCT is better for stage. Difficult to hide or walkaway or whatever with CT. When strolling I can turn my back with hands in pocket casually and remove them. Getting a p**K is one on one and play off the person. Any comments on stage CTs? PS: Daegs, now you are recommending Think Pink. I havent seen a bad review yet. I think only one that said it is good if you don't have a good arsenal already. I have an arsenal but each occasion presents different angles.

Im giving this a lotta thought lately. Constantly switching CTs and Peeks is the way to go. Stick with one but alter it between spectators.
There is one, not a CT but a blank index card. I think its Burger's. You take the index card from behind, its already prefolded. You never open it. FOld it again in front and burn it. Reveal the impossible. Ive never been questioned and layman will never get this. Its a killer! Great when someone questions a CT or PCT. Also check out Cassidy's billet s****hs. Same can be appled and used. He also prefers card stock for his billet work. Just brainstorming, more like braindraining.
