Do you mean best routine or best coins?
- For routines, I like Doc Eason's & Cody Fisher's - For coins, I'd go for Todd Lassen or Jamie Schoolcraft Richard

I have the Cody Fiser C/S/B set and his routine, which is a pleasure to work with.
But that was before I knew that Todd Lassen existed...

Doesn't Cody use the Johnson set?

Yes, Cody Fisher uses the Johnson set. He also supplies a special coin purse with his routine that helps with ringing in & out the gaffed coins.
Both Todd and Jamie are master craftsmen. Todd's reputation is well-established; the fact that Dean Dill uses Jamie's coins is speaks for the quality of his work. you're not going to be disappointed either way. Richard

Richard is right, YOu wont really be doing wrong either way. I personally went with Todd for the reason that he has been around longer. Also several of the local magicians highly reccomended Todd. Get a set of something from both.

I use a nearly standard JOHNSON coin set ... a little altered: the gimmick is made of the chinese [ and an english penny - since old and used brass and copper can't be distinguished by color. Looks very natural. I do not know what my attached pic will tell though ;-)

You mean you reversed the inside of the gimmmick? Does it show as a penny when nested, and like a chinese and silver coin when unnested?
If so the transpo would be between the copper and the chinese/silver not?

I tried them all. I like the Chinese Bit coins from Ken Brooke, made by Eddie Gibson... altho the ORIGINAL made by Connie Haden is hard to beat... then I had a custom made set from Lassen... but something in the PRESENTATION, for me... was lacking.
Even though the workmanship was superb I just wasn't happy with the set. While working on some other project with Joe Porper I asked him if he could make up the CSB coins out of Casino Poker Chips. It took awhile, but WOW... did he come up with a KILLER set up. Then I designed a leather pouch that automatically switches them for ungaffed ones with a nice move at the end of the routine. Been slaying the boys at the Castle and Dean's Shoppe with this set. Porper will have these on the market in a few days... and at $89.50 the set is a STEAL. They aren't on the website, but you can clik on the ad link here on the Café and email Joe to order.

I, too, have tried them all. Personally, I like the 2 Copper, Silver set best.
The Porper/Biro (Biro/Porper) set is quite nice. Pete's little leather pouch is nice, but I still prefer the elegance of my pouch switch from my notes and DVD. I would also check Cody Fisher's routine to round out the best of the best. Regards, Paul Green |

Pete,
Thanks for the updates.I waited the casino set for a long time. I must order mine immediate. Few weeks ago I heard Joe's health is not too good. Did he fully recovered ? Take my best regards to him. Thanks |

I highly recommend the Johnson set if you're interested in a working rather than collecting set.
I was interested in the Lassen set because of it's sheer beauty but Todd himself noted that he can't shave the chinese coin sxxxx as thin as the original because of its age. His honesty makes me respect his integrity and work even more. So if you use a close-up pad and set Lassen's gimmick down, then a spectator may be able to tell the difference between that and an original. If you just limit the magic to in-hands, then it won't be a problem but since occasionally, I'll set the gimmick down I went with the Johnson set. I'm not sure if he's still using the same older coins or if this still applies but I wrote him about a year or so ago. Lassen's set is indeed beautiful unlike anything out there. The Johnson CSB is a work-horse and the chinese coin looks good especially with some age. |

So comparing these opinions it seems that the thickness of "one part of the gimmick" may be an issue when deciding which set you want. The smaller half-dollar size coins don't have this issue.
Of course with the right audience management and routining you can use everything that's out there. From the 4 sets I have Todd's is the most beautiful and in practice it is unbeatable. I've mentioned it before but the fact that the unnested gimmick even SOUNDS right is really cool! On the other hand I've been working on the Dan Watkins version (from his last booklet), and to do that routine with dollar sized coins you need hands the size of Fred Kaps. For that I'd stick to the half-dollar coins (I use the Chinese Bit set).

I have had four sets of C/S/B coins.
One is Johnson Products version - for people who just use clad half dollar coins, this is a high quality set for the price. I don't use this set much but I have kept it for a backup. The 2nd is a dollar size CSB set that Todd Lassen made me, this set I only used for standup routines where I just show the face of the gimmick. Coins of this size I personally would only use for such a routine where I only show the faces of the coins to the audience. When the gimmick is laid flat or is viewed from the side because of its size, the edge is a "tell". The copper face is very thin, and it has a very large silver edge to it - definately not deceptive from the side. This is just a characteristic of dollar size coins - just much more viewing area from the side to catch the gimmick. But it works well for the purposes I specifically bought the coin set for. My 3rd set is a half dollar size set I bought on ebay that Todd Lassen made. It was made with an authentic Chinese coin. This suffers on a smaller degree from the same thing as the dollar set. Since the authentic Chinese coin is wafer thin, the gimmick has a wafer thin Chinese side to it and a full sized silver edge. If you glimpse the gimmick edge, it is exposed, the other thing is the gaff by its very nature cannot be as thin as the real Chinese coin, so its a pretty big discrepency. I sold this set to a friend who did not care about the discrepancy. The issues with the 2nd and 3rd set is 100% attributed to the type of coins, not the craftsmanship. My 4th CSB set I picked up from Jamie Schoolcraft. It is the African Dime, Peru, Walking Liberty one that I use on my DVD. Because the African dime is normal thickness, the gimmick is much more deceptive, with the edge 50% silver 50% copper like a C/S coin. (the Johnson gimmick's edge is like this too, 50% silver 50% brass). So for the most common routines I would recommend either the Johnson set or if you get a custom set made, get it with coins that are half dollar size, all normal thickness like African Dimes, Centavos, Peruvian, English Pennies, any half dollar type, etc.(no super thin coins). Custom made quarter size ones look pretty cool too, but I don't own any of these. |

I beleave I'm going to go with Jamie but not sure if I should go with Halfs or Walking Liberty I have Jamie's 64 Kennedy set and I'm not sure if I went with the Liberty CSB I would also need to get another walking liberty.

To Magicxman: Porper is fine. He had a "very slight" blockage and it was fixed by his doctor with a "stint" -- Matter of fact as I write this he's in Las Vegas on Billiard business.
The POKER CHIP SURPRISE is now available... go to http://www.porperorignals.com to buy (you need to email to get it as it is not on the site yet) or http://www.hocus-pocus.com where it is in stock and you can see photos of it.
