Thanks, Chance. I am, presently, trying to find information to send to Losander on a "knock off: on one of his products that I own. I have no problem in trying to protect the creators of magic. Just don't think it should become a free for all.
Does anyone have an e-mail for Losander. If so please, PM, me.

I am not going to get into the argument on this other to say that I would have not bothered to release something that is so strongly associated with another company.
As for the card on the seat, I remember when CW first came out with it my buddies in Buffalo laughed about. Who in the heck would pay to put a card on the seat under someone? You just palm the darn thing and load it. Karl Norman has been doing this for years. So did Paul Diamond. Probably even before Karrell. I would never buy either just too much money to load a card. Richard PS. I staying on the high ground as I am sure Chance and George will.

What got it resolved were an ethical dealer who called me and asked me to speak to Greg about it and a phone call from Greg to George in which they worked out the proper terms. Greg's product was an answer to a need that was generated by the original Collector's Workshop prop, which was not always reliable. George has been working to improve the reliability of the prop. This has been an ongoing project for George, who has had to do this to nearly everything that Collector's had made, including Perfect Time, Jumbo Sidekick II, and the list goes on. Warren Stephens had a nice sideline going modifying Jumbo Sidekick so it would work every time. My Jumbo Sidekick spent more time in Virginia getting repaired than I have ever spent in Virginia. So Greg's primary market for his item was people who had already purchased the original card on the seat from Collectors Workshop. The main thing about his version, as he was selling it previously, was that it worked 100% of the time. And that is something that could not have been said about the version Collectors Workshop made. George says that he will have the prop available in December. I sincerely hope his estimate is accurate. It will be nice to have a functional version of the original on the market once again. However, the contributions of the magic Café gossipping society had nothing at all to do with this. I have no problem with any of Chance's posts, but most of the rest of you people did nothing to help. This is almost exactly the same thing that happened to Whit and Bob when Andrew Pinard jumped into the fray with Doug Bush. It took a situation that could have been resolved a week ago, when the original topic was posted, got several people upset, tarnished a man's reputation and bascially did nothing more than a tempest in a teacup. Some of you who think that this flare-up has contributed to settling this out should think back to incidents in your own past in which I contacted you to find out the proper history of an item or the derivation of an effect instead of causing a stink in the magic community.

Well said Bill. You are absolutely correct when you mentioned the problem inherrent in the original version.
I am glad that things have been worked out between Greg and George. Richard

George has given Greg permission to sell of his remaining stock of the present version. He will be marketing a new version that is not at all in competition with what George sells. Because Greg is the one who should make the announcement, I will defer to him to do so. I doubt that anyone will take issue with the new version when it is released.

Sears has these wooden folding chairs on sale for 9.99 each. So for 20.00 you can do Daryl's version and save either 830.00 or 430.00. No one has a copyright on these chairs.

Hi Bill,
In your very first post on the subject you flat out stated, "However, the product is definitely a ripoff." Perhaps YOU should have contacted him first before making such a statement. Later we all get criticized for not contacting Greg himself before our statements. I'm not trying to be critical of anyone, but as I said, "whether you agree or not," the flair up WAS the catalyst that resulted in how this turned out. Maybe we should ALL get a slap on the wrist for not contacting Greg, but I highly suspect had none of this been posted he would never have contacted George. In fact, his response through a third party seems to suggest this was the first he heard of the controversy. We'll never know, but it is now resolved and that's really all that matters. The Magic Community is forgiving, which is okay, and now we all think Greg is a good guy, which was probably true in the first place, and it all ends well with a happy agreement between him and George. And, those who are interested in the effect will buy whichever version they wish or the new thing that will soon be released. All's well that ends well. |

I admit that I concluded it was a ripoff before I talked to Greg. However, Greg had spoken to George about this before I talked to him.
You don't know the facts in this matter. NONE of them.

I wasn't being critical and sorry if it came across that way. I'm just saying that NONE of us contacted Greg first so nobody should be chastised for failing to do so. And, I'm sorry but it is not true that I don't know any of the facts because a very ethical dealer who will carry the new "outfit," had also contacted me and let me know of what transpired and of his arrangements with Greg Gleason himself.
But, judging from Greg's original, and absurd, explanation/justification that the only similarity between his effect (as shown on the video, which was the basis of this entire thread,) was the use of two wooden folding chairs, it truly appears he was content with things just the way they were prior to hearing of the opinions expressed on this thread. If that were not the case, he would have responded by simply telling us that our assessments were premature and that he and George were already in contact. Instead, he asks us, "What's the issue?" which clearly indicates that the agreement came AFTER the flair up. So, agree with me or don't agree with me; it doesn't matter. But, I think, in this case, the public outcry did some good and led to the amicable resolution of this issue. This reminds me of the issue with Adam Grace's Frostbite and Devin Knight on another thread. It, too, got amicably resolved. But, all's well that ends well, so this is my final post on this subject and good luck to Greg, George and all the dealers involved. |

Why would have Gleason had to do anything? Legally he is in his rights to market his own version
It was not CW and Vikings idea either. We as a society don't buy one brand 4k tv. Most wait for the other versions and hope for lower price. If the mechanism was different and more reliable, I don't think he should have had to answer to this board or anyone else. Just like XW states his props are variations if the past so I was not clear on his uproar. People stated the cue card idea was also around so I am not sure what was real issue other than not liking the fact of competition in a capitalust society. Sure it sucks. A new mom and pop bagel place just opened up near me and not a week later a national donut chain just builds and in a few weeks later is already in business competing. That had got to hurt and I hope that they can offer a superior product that will keep them going. But you can't try to restrict the trade of others if it other was not legally protected. The difference between these two products is different than what goes on in China and India. They don't try to make a better gimmick. They even copy the packaging and try to copy the prop look but with cheaper materials. They rely on their isolation that you won't ship garbage back. I have always thought many would have less issue with China if they tried to make their own , improved versions. |
