Perhaps a silly question :
Bank night is a strong opener. No doubt. BUT the version with envelopes seems to be stronger than the version with keys (7 keys to baldpate with a banknight theme). Why would this be ? Because the lock could be gaffed in the eyes of "laymen" ? Or is it just magicians who know about gaffed locks who care about such things ? Are these real concerns or are we over-analyzing ? Just wondering... |

Traveler,
Maybe its a question of simplicity. If you really wanted to give a chance for someone to win the bill, not a magic effect but a real contest, would you use envelopes or a lock? Richard |

I'll just say this because Richard can't. The best version of 'Bank Nite' is the one created by Richard Osterlind, as featured on Volume 1 of his DVD series. I have tried, and tried, and tried to think of any way of improving on this, and I just can't. It's perfectly structured from start to finish, and I use it often.

I have also used K-Rect and it is a great product and since you never touch the lock or the keys the heat is not on the lock. I use five lovely ladies, one man and a pair of shackles...
...lots of fun! I also must say that Goal Mine by Max Raven rocks! |

Don't want to push my Clear Nite, but a few have PM'd me about it. Other than that, I have mixed the bank nite plot with key-rect and even threw in El Numero.
It's hard to explain, but you can use them together.... think about having little tags on all the keys and someone marks them randomly with numbers from one to six and you say that you can get them to get the right key by influencing their next choice... you have them stop you on one of the El Numero cards and that number key is the one that is used to open the lock. It's just a quirky mixture of both routines. Greg

I have also used Richard's routine with great success. Another method that has wordked well for me is Lee Earle's Manilla Miracle from The Desert Brainstorm Series Vol 2 and also in his E-Book, Early Earle.

Yes, that version is very clean because if they wanted to they could examine all the left over envelopes and the load is a snap! I still like goal mine as an opener. |

Just can SECOND all the posts about Richards Bank Night routine. All you have to do is to add your own verbal presentation and you are set to go.
As direct and clean as a Bank night should be and the good thing is that everybody wins something and thus there is no loser. Excellent routine and also use it very often. Regards Thomas |

Thank you for all those wonderful comments about the Bank Night routine. There are many other great versions, of course, and Greg Arce's idea with the clear bags is outstanding.
The only thing I wanted to add is that I consider the routine one of my best, not because of the method, but because of the routineing. After years of doing it and trying this and that idea out, I finally got to where it is now. It just plays so well. And that is my point. A magical effect is only as good as the routine you mold around it. You have to take so many things into consideration and then put them all together so that, like a song, everything works with everything else. That is what takes time and, more importantly, trial and error. Please keep one thought in mind - quality is much better than quantity. I used to want to learn every new secret that came my way. Now I just want to know what plays! Richard |

First, thank you Richard for that compliment.
But, second, and most important, what Richard has said is THE most important thing about an effect. Routining. How it's presented. All the little why's and how's are covered. All the psychology behind it is taken care of. Without a doubt Richard puts a lot of time and thinking into his routines so if you attempt them or any others, then try to put as much thinking into them as he does. You'll certainly be a winner that way. Greg

And that is what takes years and years to learn:) I would do Bank Night more often if I could afford the lottery tickets:) Hate to give away just paper. Maybe store coupons might work:)

Routineing? - Im not sure WHO said it, but paraphrasing here - its not what you do its the way that you do it!? Sounds like a good thing to aim for! Thank you again Sir! Best ML x |

As an opener, I would think a 7 Keys to Baldplate theme would slow things down with the necessary proving that only one key will open the lock.
I just got Mind Mysteries vol. 1 the other night, and I agree that his version of Bank Night is a great routine. Most of these kind of routines are just about over as soon as the spectators open their chosen envelopes. Mr. Osterlind has one spectator hold back from opening their envelope, and this helps build suspense (or at least a kind of dramatic tension). |

For those of you doing it, what's the best size envelope for this routine?
|
|||||||||
Thomas Rudolfo Special user Vienna, Austria, EU 640 Posts |
The envelopes which work best for me are of the size of european DIN B6 standard (12.5x17.5 cm) about 4.92x6.89 inch
But it may depend on your handling and goodies you want to give away. Greetings Thomas |
