Did they give you any Scooby Snacks? That might have been worth it!

Curt,
Living near Gallaudet University, I've done a couple of shows for deaf audiences. They provide a signer and it's challenging because the audience are switching their attention between me and the signer. I had some fun by making up magic words which the signer couldn't translate. The signer was laughing and the audience caught on with what I was doing and enjoyed watching the signer struggle. One time I was doing a restaurant gig and there was a blind and deaf person at the table. The person with them was signing in their hand. I had no idea what to do, so unfortuantely I just did a quick card trick for the signer and said goodbye. I wish I could have thought of something to do, but if the person can't hear OR see that's tough. Best, James |

Best trick I've found for the blind is, multiplying sponge balls in their hand.

A person who can't hear is fine. They can still see. But how do you do a magic trick for a blind person?

Ok here is my weirdest booking call. My fiancé received the call, so here is the transpired version. A woman with a very thick urban Chicago accent called and asked we had any pendulums. My fiancé says, "Do you mean the thing that swings back and forth?" The woman answers, "No, I mean the thing you wear around your neck. Its like a star only with more points." My fiancé replies, "Oh you mean a pentagram. No we don't have anything like that. We are entertainers. We are not a store." The woman insisted that it was called a pendulum. No matter how much Michelle assured her it was called a pentagram the woman won't believe her. So the woman says, "Well where can I get one." My Fiancé says, "I don't know." The woman yells, "You have to know. I need one. I need it now." So my now befuddled partner asks, "Do you need this for a party?" She says, "No I just need it for me. I need it now!" Then the woman began to get irate and demanded that Michelle tell her where to get one. So, Michelle hung up.
We get many prank/weird/just plan uninformed calls, but this was the weirdest. Edd

Edd,
In a situation like that, I think it would have been best to refer the "client" to another magician in town... Perhaps a good friend ...or maybe your worst enemy... Next time, be sure to give them their phone number and mention that they stock many many pendulums! LOL! Lyndel |

I haven't really had any weird cals, except for one I just got today. It isn't too weird, but it seemed strange. I had a guy call me with an Indiana area code. He wanted me to do a Christmas show somewhere in IN. It might not seem weird to you, but for me, it was. I only get calls from people in this area in Florida to do shows, and not from other states. It was hard to understand him, and he just hung up before I could say much...I am guessing he isn't going to call back anytime soon.

Tyler,
Be cautious of callers like this... I don't know if you read my post on page one of this topic, but it bears repeating here. See this link: http://tinyurl.com/dhygn Be successful, but be careful! Lyndel |

Yes, I have read that, and that is what made me think something was going wrong with the call.

I had a very casual acquaintance with a young woman who used to stop by the bar in a restaurant where I work. She had once given me her card, which I promptly "lost"; she sold coral nutritional supplements (whatever THAT is!) One day she asked me to do my show for her daughter's birthday party, but she wanted to know if I would do it "on trade." Remembering from the past that she sold the weird supplement, I was very non-committal. She gave me her card again, but told me to visit her website which she jotted down on the card, and she asked me to call her if I saw anything on the site I wanted. I did visit the website, and was shocked (but amused) to discover that she was a "full service escort"! Being a married man, I didn't make the call!
As for doing magic for the blind, I've done quite a bit of it, actually. Let them feel everything. Sponge balls, as previously mentioned, are great. I've done coin matrix, letting them feel the position of the coins before I cover them, and each "empty" area as I move the cards. "Two in the hand, one in the pocket", again letting them feel the coins in your hands; I even let them drop the coin into my pocket during the second phase (it's a 3-phase routine.) And, of course, a version of "Powers of Darkness." Just give it some thought -- there are LOTS of tricks the blind can appreciate. |

It'd be a heck of a magic video - real incentive to perform well!
(PS - Are we lowering the level of discourse here? Can't resist the temptation, though. Ahh, dream on...) |

When the first question I'm asked is "what is your cheapest price" I always say $500 take it or leave it. Even if you agree to do it at a reduced price you will not get any help with your equipment, a drink of water, offered food, laughs, or applause, from those who lack basic social skills. Al
