Anyone have ideas on how to bring back the spring to a Walsh appearing cane from
the 70's? It has gotten very slow. |

First off store it open. Then clean it throughly and reoil it with a light gun oil. It might just be dirty.
If that doesn't cure it, the temper may have lessened in the steel. I am not sure it can retemper in it's finished form. Richard

You must look on this as an asset. With out tipping anything you have the makings of a great stage opener.Russ Walsh use to give less tempered canes to some magicians.Look at Neil Fosters or Dale Salwaks stage act opehings...Cordially,Howard

How did they use the cane?

You need to watch Dale work but I will tell you that I make the silks for his cane.
Richard ps. Hi Cythnia. Sorry to tease you Dave but I think it is something that you best see. It is not mine to tip. Richrd

Having taken lessons from the Late Neil Foster, he informed me that there is no special condition the cane must be in for the effect you all are refering to. I think it is very poor to assume that a poorly overused cane is needed. It is not. Neil Foster showed me his method and you need a good cane.
If your cane is oversprung, it will need to be re-tightened or every vanishing Russ Walsh cane I have seen does loosen with use. I have not know the appearing to do this. I have one of each of the originals and they are still in good condition. |

I hate to disagree but I do not think Neil told you the truth. The cane must be prepared in a special way in order to do his opening. It is IMPOSSIBLE to do with a normal appearing cane.I have a cane that Neil gave me.It is not unprepared. His opening has nothing to do with a vanishing cane. Cordially,Howard

I also don't know what effects would call for a slower cane. Only thing that comes to mind is the slow transformation of a black silk with white tip as the silk is waved and slowly stiffens into a cane. But even then you can control the speed at which the cane is produced - well at least I can. I'm lost. |

You guys are so silly, if you actually did any of the magic tricks you could see that most of the stuff can be done. The difference between a real magician and an armchair magician, I guess. |

I do know what Neil did and it was with an appearing cane.

I also think that you need a less tempered cane to perform Foster`s routine. James Cielen is also using that and once we talked about it. In 1999 I was in Canada and found a new cane which was made for this effect. The coil was a bit loose on the top of the cane. Maybe there is a way to prepeare a regular cane but I have never seen it or read it. All people who I know to perform Foster-Salwak routine have just found a loose cane and that`s it. I don`t know if it is the same method but it works.

As far as I know you can perform the vanish with a Harakhan Appearing cane as well.

You can prepare a regular appearing cane with graphite and a lot of elbow grease. You must open and close it until you work the temper out.You must be careful or you will break the cane in the process.Cordially Howard
