Don't be too worried Plastic...I have a LOT of Mayne's stuff...For a reason. He might gloss over the details occasionally, and a lot of what he does is remarkably simplistic, but I have yet to try something from his books that did not work. Some things better than others (Body Morphing- On the cover, he lifts himself up to horizontal on a sign post. Even he states that he was only able to do this one once due to blistering on the palms) but they all work.
When it comes to his full on illusions however (Voodoo Box, Razorwire, gutbuster, etc...) he describes the methods in full, and personally, I have used them on stage and found them to be quite effective. I use Voodoo Box (My own modified version of it based off of his plans and notes) at all of my ren faire shows. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTP66ALF8iQ You will learn to perform the tricks from the book. (And Andrew does answer e-mails if you run into problems...) Hope this helps! Gwyd |

Hi all,
I have Mayne's "IllusionTech vol 01" and it's a great book IMHO. There are clear explanations and pictures (no real plans, though) and all of them (design- and working-principals of illusions, bases and more) would work (but he's not too generous with naming the originators). Maybe Starrpower should try that book... (I value Eric Van Duzer's "The Seven Basic Secrets of Iliusion Design" higher than Mayne's book, but that's another story...) Regards, Gene |

Thanks very much!
I always get a little nervous putting performance videos out there, especially inviting a professional audience to see them. But you never get better without feedback! Thanks again, Gwyd |

Quite frankly, I don't care if Andrew Mayne's books have complete ideas. Most tricks have to be developed further by the performer, anyway. I'm just glad that someone is putting those ideas out there.
It's the work put into the routine that makes it something that belongs to the performer. That work helps to make the routine complete, something that is rarely found in a book. The performer's experience will always figure into the routine. |

Andrew Mayne is an extremely talented magician and television / film maker.
I will say that some of his tricks / illusions are page fillers. He (LIKE EVERYONE ELSE) has some amazing ideas, but when you write a book, you need additional tricks to support these and add pages for it to actually be a book. These support tricks may not be as strong as the others, but they are still tricks. But even these have possibilities, they just require the right atmosphere to be utilized. His tricks such as 'Infusion', 'Finger through Shirt', 'Pen through Cheek', 'Gutbuster' are amazing! And his work on refining the spike through Tongue is in-genius. On the other side of the coin, There are tricks like armbuster, which is a re-vamp version of candle through arm. Not to say that there is anything wrong with re-vamping an old trick, but I would never have sold it as an individual trick, only as part of a collection inside a book. But that's my view. I appreciate the work he has put into re-vamping old tricks, and designing new ones. His research has helped me in my performance, and my publishing work. I believe he wants to specialize his talents in film-making, which is why he has released a number of videos lately. It is my suggestion he looks at the work of George Melies (French Magician in 1890, who turned to television magic, and became the father of special effects). Developing tricks that can be utilized in front of the camera to perform super-illusions. His insight into the film-making process offers him a unique way of thinking which will make his name in magic go down in history. E.g. Lance Burton vanishing car in desert Steve |

Ricker and gsidhe, nice vids! And, on topic, Andrew Mayne's ideas don't suck. Some of them I wouldn't ever think of performing, of course, but that rings true for everything I've read or seen. Pick and choose, pick and choose.

The main idea behind a lot of these things is to throw the idea out there. These are not meant to be complete plans, but rather ideas for one to be able to modify and thus make the illusion his own. Too many times, I've seen illusions performed that are exactly the same every single time. An example would be Zig-Zag lady. Middle section goes out.... ta-daaaaaa.
For a guy like me though, who doesn't perform any major illusions (yet) and is on a VERY limited budget (ie, college student), I could easily adapt the ideas to fit my budget and my build, instead of having to spend money for plans which require a large amount of money to build. That being said, I'm really a fan of his Illusionworks series for the budget reasons I mentioned. If he came out in one of his books and mentioned something about a sword box with umbrellas, I'm sure many of the same arguments would be made as are being made here. Granted, they are valid and completely understood; however the point is to make your own modifications. Now, the plans for that very sword box are being sold and (I'm told) it looks actually very good. In this society where we expect a lot of the work to be done for us, we can forget how satisfying it can be to re-work an old idea into something we can be proud of

Hi Gwyd,
Thanks for the advice - Solo-X arrived an hour ago and is well worth the money - very glad I got it. Also glad I looked at your vid - presentation perfect for the venue - Loved you Monty Pythonesque character - shows magic is so much more than the trick - there's the acting, the laughs, the personality... Very enjoyable |

I've got several of his plans, and just got Voodoo Box, which I consider to be a great application of the sword box (and I loved your performance gsidhe!). I like his presentation ideas, and will likely incorporate it into my routine with a variation of my own. For low cost, high reaction illusions his plans can't be beat IMO.
