An instant knot can be done either prepared beforehand or by using sleight of hand.
There's probably a number of names used for this trick. |

There is also the method which is simply a skill where you flip the rope up and strike it properly so that it tosses a knot.

The two main methods of doing this are both in Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks for Magicians, which is available in a Dover edition at a great price. Many magic books which include a section of rope magic will also have these tricks.

I call it "throwing a knot" or "knot throwing" I don't classify it as a trick, I call it a skill. You must have lots of time on your hand to master this skill.

I learned it from a guy I met at a juggling convention. Above it states that the trick can be found in the Abbott encyclopedia of rope magic, but I will tell you that after you master this dufficult trick you will have to practice it regularly to maintaine the subtle wrist twist required to throw the knot.

Get a piece of rope and just start to practice with it... THINK about the dynamics of the way the rope HAS TO MOVE to creat a single knot.
I've been doing this for 50 years or more... to cheat it you can put a little bit (very little) weight on the bottom end and strike the rope with your index finger (the one holding the upper end) and this will make the bottom swing up and through the loop.

To the best of my knowledge it is one of those tricks passed down by word of mouth, and no one can remember where it started, kinda like the boomerang rubber band trick.
