Is duplicating an authors Mentalism material ie: books,
DVD,Videos, to friends immoral ?

WARNING: ranting

What I’m trying to figure out is this.

If there seems to be nothing wrong, with exposing magic or mentalism on TV,
( regarding to authors of books, and/or of videos who believe exposure is no
big deal on TV) then it should also be of no concern to the authors of these said
books whose material might I add was not of their invention to begin with,. to be exposed,
copied , sold, and shared among other magicians. Pirated in other words.

It would seem hypocritical of an author or authors to
cry about piracy if they see no problem with exposure. After
all aren’t they making money off something they didn’t originate ?
It would seem befitting if you are making money at exposing
something to a public that has not paid for it to begin with, that you (authors)
should have no problem with your works being pirated, shared or exposed to
magicians/mentalist that haven’t paid for it either.
Authors with this belief that exposure is ok, should be the last ones to cry
about piracy.

I don’t wish to get into a debate or the volleying back and forth of
semantics of how exposure has been around for a long time.
I only wish to state that if any author in the field of performing
thinks that exposure is no big deal, then they should also have no problem
with their own works being exposed. This is a logical statement,…No ?
Unless one can logically explain the difference to me,… authors should see nothing wrong
with people that, pirate their material, if they are in favor of exposure on TV.
“TV”, mind you, not books stores, or magic shops. Don’t start that sophomoric analogy

I wonder how Robert Nelson, or Herb Dewy would feel about some of there
writings, being exposed without purchase. Isn’t that in fact what is happening ?
No matter how one may justify the “exposure”, the fact remains the same…You are
exposing material that is not yours intellectually or collectively.
Just as a “rose is a, rose” Exposure , is exposure.
If one feels exposure is good, then one shouldn’t cry about their works being
exposed, copied, shared, duplicated. After all …it is better for the art, isn’t it.

Just a thought.

I share your frustration and agree with your feelings about exposure.

However, as much as I despise exposers of magical secrets, I could never condone exposing another's material, even those materials of an "exposer" magician. I'm sure you feel the same way and know that it is not really "better for the art."

Blatant exposure of our secrets is never justifiable.

You're trying to equate exposure with blatant copyright violation.

Two completely different things.

Sneaky way of re-opening the "Ian Rowland/Exposure" thread tho'.... Smile

Without fully agreeing with the intent of the topic, I agree that exposing other's material is a slippery slope and that it can be difficult to draw the line as to what is appropriate and what is not.
