I thought I would ask this separately as asking two unrelated questions in the same post might be a bit on the awkward side!

I have some of the cork Crocheted red balls with my cups but find them a little light and they do roll a bit too much for my taste - even on my close up mat. Can anyone suggest a source for some nice balls perhaps with a bit of weight to them? I know several of you will suggest the mini baseballs that Michael Ammar uses on the Cups & Balls videos, but as baseball isn't really very popular here in the UK, it may arouse suspicion with my audiences - or it may not, your thoughts here would be appreciated on this, as well as if you can suggest a good source for balls.

Thanks again and speak to you all again soon!

If I remember correctly, you bought the Bazar cups. They are great cups, but the balls supplied with them are just OK. The primary problem is that the yarn covering isn't thick enough. That makes them more likely to roll, and worse, they can be very "talky" in the cups.

My suggestion is to obtain some genuine Morrissey crocheted balls. The yarn is much thicker and solves both of the above problems. You can order them directly from Morrissey at http://www.morrisseymagic.com/hand_knit_balls.htm. If ordering from Canada is too complicated, Hank Lee also carries them, see http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/customer/search.php?substring=balls. I don't know of any suppliers in the UK, although I'm sure there must be some.

I would suggest either red or white balls, in either the 1" or 3/4" size, depending on what your hands can handle. And I would order an extra set as long as you're at it; sooner or later one or more of the little devils will go south on you! There are also some routines that require more than four balls.

Crocheted balls are also available from Indian companies, but in my experience, they aren't as good -- they're shaped more like walnuts than balls, they're too hard and they also talk too much. Get the real thing and they should perform well and last a long time. SETH

Great!

Thanks Gede Nibo, I like the look of those!

Sethb, thanks once again my friend! You're right, I did order ther Bazar Cups! Very pleased with them but you're right, the crochet on the balls is pretty thin and as well as rolling a bit too much, they do seem to "talk" a bit too much too. I will definitely look at getting the ones from Hank Lee - I don't mind ordering them from the US.

thanks for looking into those for me guys!

anyone else got any suggestions?

I use a set made by Dave VanVranken. They are a good weight and they don't roll around as much as other balls I have used. Good stuff!

Dave, you need to send me another set for my Cellini cups!

I was recently pursuing the same question--I found the monkey fist balls worked really well--they are heavier and don't roll as much. I ordered them from http://www.theambitiouscard.com. I'm certain many other places sell them as well. Gazzo sells what you in the UK erroneously refer to as "Footballs"--they are, of course, soccer balls! (I'm kidding) His web site is http://www.magicpitch.com

Good luck!

Most of the Monkey Fist balls have marbles for centers. This gives them added weight. If you want the best, though, see about getting some Eric Evans balls. He has some that have braided leather coverings. I think Frank Starsini also makes balls like this.

If you want a good source in the UK, have a look at the handmade leather baseballs that Clive sells at Cards4Magic. Clive also has a selection of crocheted balls. If you give them a call, they're very helpful.

Christian Jedinat in Germany also does some very nice leather baseballs in different colours.

If you are going to get baseballs, get the ones from Jedinat. Their quality is much better than the current Mike Rogers balls. The best are from van Dokkum, but they are very expensive.
