I've posted this thread in the "Helping hands" section but its not a widely used section, so I thought I might be able to get help here.
I would like to start doing a show with my fiance (she's all for it). I'm looking for any illusions that would accomidate her height. She is 5'8". She is fit but not stick thin. I think she weighs about 140 lbs. So any suggustions on an illusion that we could use. We already have a sub trunk that we hope will become part of the show. I'm looking for atleast one more illusion that would become part of this future show. Thanks in advance. Edd

There are many illusions where height and weight are not an issue. Agility is more important than either to most Illusions. If you are buying an Illusion and the assistant has to cram into a small space, that's a problem. Those Illusions will usually specify the maximum height and weight of the assistant. But most illusions are like the sub trunk which will take almost any size assistant as long as she can get in and out of it.
You need to specify which illusion you are thinking of adding to your act before someone in this forum can comment on the subject of assistant height and weight for the illusion.

Almost any illusion can be made to fit a taller girl. I have a friend who's assistant is 5'11", and she does the Mini Cube Zag ... they just had it built 2" taller than usual. The funny thing is, my assistant, who's about 5'7" and very slender, could not fit. So, it's not just the height, but the body structure.
Of course, Sub Trunk can fit a taller girl (heck, the magician needs to fit it, and he's generally as tall or taller than the girl.) Slick Post fits any size person. A levitation or suspension probably isn't height restrictive. Palanquin usually allows for a taller girl. Assistant's Revenge will work nicely, as will Modern Cabinet. These are examples of "off the shelf" illusions that will probably fit her without special construction. Wait until Den jumps into this conversation ... I'll bet he'll have his usual encyclopedic list of appropriate illusions (here's hoping!) |

Jack Murry from Dream Illusion is building a J.C. Sum illusion that is REALLY cool and it just fits me. Contact him and he can give you more information.
This illusion is VERY deceptive. So for a tall person it makes it look even more convincing. here is more information http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......=7&3 Michael

My zig zag works better with a taller girl. Her back side is just the right higtheth. I now put books in the bottom if I use my shorter assistant. It seems to be more of a body width issue. It looks better with a taller girl. It was built for my wife, 5'4" but works better with our 5'8" assistant.

Everyone, Thanks for your posts so far. Please keep the ideas coming.
To answer Jim's question, I don't really know what I want because I'm just getting into this. I can tell you where I would like to do and what qualities I'm looking for. 1. Will fit in a car. 2. Can be done surrounded. 3. Can be performed with only two people (her and me). 4. Can be performed in a non-theatre setting. (ie- not fly loft, no special lighting). As to the magician usually being taller than the assistant. Not in our case. I'm only 5'6" she towers a good two inches above me. But we've gotten used to it. Edd

Hey Edd,
maybe look into something like lightbulbs through girl if it fits your style or something like twister even. You'll probably not want to get any bigger for simple two person illusions to be done surrounded. Those are sort of two extreme examples from the packs very small to the packs bigger...something to keep in mind... LEARNING IS A HIT!!! danny boy

Dan,
Good to see you outside of our school assemblies. Lightbulbs thru girl is a good idea, since someone offered one to me for sale. Thoughts. . . Edd

Michael,
That's a good question. I think it is a Jim Sommers but I can't be sure. I would have to ask the seller. Edd

Hi Wiz, I do know that some illusions like impailed (my favorite stage illusion) may give you trouble. My girlfriend and assistant is 6'2" same hight as I but her legs are just never ending. Her inseem on her pants is 37" mine is 34", she is very slim about 130 pound so I will not be able to perform this illusion with her as I would need to move the balanceing point twards her legs makeing the illusion very obseen. But she is very flexible so I can do a sword basket and some other tight space illusions with her. Also when working with a taller assistant your productions will look much better. Imagine this large looking girl (not large as in fat but more like tall and if in a flowing costume type of large... I'm trying to stay out of trouble...) appearing from a tiny space.
Another thought (usuually I only have one a day) if you watch David Copperfield he is usually the subject in the illusionl. In this case you may consider performing the illusions yourself. I don't know your style but it could be funny if your the magician that's going to cut the assistant in half, she doesent like this idea and she over powers you and shoves you into the boxes. There is a lot of comedy potential... I don't know but I hope this helps, Fitz

However, in general a woman's center of balance is lower than that of a man (men have more upper body mass, women have more in the hips.) I just wonder if it would still work if you affected the balance by have her throw her arms out over her head, and bend her legs in at the knees. |

If you had a "mismatched" team of tall magician/small assistant (or vice versa) you could play off that. Assuming s/he would fit, it would be interesting to do a compresser type illusion on the taller person. And, before or after that match it with a stretching type illusion on the other person (I think the Don Wayne one would work well for that).

We were talking about a shrinking/compressing type illusion. We think that has great comedy potentional. Anybody know any "real" names of these illusions and some builders/sources?
Fitz, I like the "she doesn't want to be in the illusion, so she overthrows me" idea. I'm going to think on it. Edd
