My uncle gave me two candles. One candle is an inch longer than the other. I lit the long one at 4:30 p.m. I lit the shorter one at 6:00 p.m. They were both the same length at 8:30 p.m. The first one went out at 10:30 p.m. and the second one went out at 10:00 p.m.
How long were they when I lit them? How much did the candles cost?

Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Don't know how long they were yet. But if your uncle gave them to you, they didn't cost you anything.

Is the first question a trick question so you ask what both lengths are at 6 pm? Otherwise the first candle is 9 inches when lit and the second one is 8 inches when lit, if each burn at a constant pace and "the first one" means the "long one". If the "first one" is the short one it's 1+10/17 inches while the other is 2+10/17 inches.

9 and 8 inches. That's correct.
