O.K. koz, I'll have a go at it and then I'll send the clip to you for review and possible approval. Just to be clear: What I am intending to try to do is to edit a clip (the performance only of the Lonnie's "Grandpa's Dollar") off of the DVD. I'm intending to do a staight capture of just the performance portion of this effect (and leaving out any intorductory patter, interaction with spectators, storyline and explanation). In other words, just a "down and dirty" video of the actual performance portion itself.
BTW, will we have to also obtain Lonnie's permission for this film clip to be posted or is your permission (as producer) legally sufficient for such purposes? For those interested in the procedure, I'll have to first run the "performace only" portion of the DVD thru a video capture card and save the file. If all goes well, I'll end up with a .wmv file (i.e., a Windows Media file). That said, it'll also depend on how big the file ends up. I'm guessing that it should only be about a 400 meg size file. If koz approves of the film clip, I think that I can email it to Vinny and he can then post it on his video file website and then provide a reference to the site and you can then click on the file name to see it. Absent that, or something similar, I don't know how a file of this size could be linked. The Café would never allow a file of this size to be placed directly on the Café. I'm open to suggestions here on this point. I'll see what I can do on the project first thing tomorrow. Mike

On 2005-09-23 01:21, Turk wrote: For those technically interested, not having a video capture card, there is another, probably a bit more complicated way to get to a similar result. You copy the exact capture you want to release from that DVD onto an RW disc, just the section you want, nothing else. Use of the RW-disk solely so you later can erase and reuse it. To do the above, you have to have a DVD-recorder and a DVD Player to do the mentioned copy. Now insert the DVD into your PC's DVD drive, a Player will do, hasn't to be a burner and use suitable and fully legal software, like a DVD-ripper, f.ex. the one at: http://www.imtoo.net/dvd-ripper.html where a free trial version also can get downloaded (credit for recommending that particualar brand gos to Dave van Vranken) DON'T use the one from the dvdtodivx.net, that one is rubbish! Anyway, this ripper will convert that DVDs contents into an avi file, compressed to DIVX, so the output IS an avi-file that can get uploaded to a suitable side and played therfrom directly. You also have the option of converting the avi-file to f.ex. and Mpeg 1 or 2 file via another program, recommended is, accordingly to my own experimentations and findings, the one from: http://www.winmpg.com Now having an mpeg file on your PC, you can use default Nero 5 software to even create your own DVD with up/down choosable titles like the pro DVDs you buy.. You also can make subtitels, a main tile, aso.. Each title is accompanied by a picture frame that pops up when you run that DVD on any Player. If and when you that way f.ex. have 4 diff. captures of performances, you can get a quite nice and professional result, where you can choose which one of the captures on that DVD to run..titles can easily get added via Nero 5. Of course, to make your own DVD, you have to have a decent burner in your PC, but basically it is very easy to make a nice DVD. All the above entirely *off topic* re *magic*, but probably interesting for those wanting to make their own DVD, or ripping out parts of existing DVDs to get files able to get forwarded via the net... And, BTW the producers of DVDs don't worry I've never done and ripped out any portion from a commercial DVD, but solely bits and pieces from DVDs I recorded myself, apart from this, I solely *can* do it in PAL and can't touch the US based NTSC made DVDs, but I can choose a PAL or NTSC output when creating a DVD by use of NERO.

Ripping a 30-60 second clip off a DVD for private use would CERTAINLY fall under fair use.

Yea...maybe, MATBE but once you put it on the net its certainly no longer...and letting your frined borrow by making a copy would certainly not fall under fair use

Ted, hurry up to release the Slydini captures so the guys can duplicate and ripp it off
Just kidding, BUT, there actually are copyprotections that DO work..try to investigate re the possibilities.. The drawback in some cases is, that even legal/original DVDs can have probs in playing/running on older TVs and players, therefor a thorough investigation re what system to use is needed before you get it applied.. The *experts* however can ripp it all into parts, no matter what protection there is used, these ppl however ar rare and most are not into magic, so a copyprotection would protect copying in 98%s of the situation. Give it a thought, it might prevent you're loosing those *customers* you could be without...

How does offering a short perforance only clip for viewing aversly effect sales?
As to ripping etc... not worth a comment. Given the state of technology it's pretty much an honor system, so any extra mucking with the product simply increases the cost and alters the demand curve.

On 2005-09-22 19:24, tedb wrote: Koz, I experimented with this and had video clips from 80 meg down to 17.9 meg. The 17.9 meg clip involves a video only (no audio) of the "Grandpa's Routine" starting from where Lonnie makes the joke about the dollar bill "** creases"). From that point until the dollar bill is put away, takes 17.9 meg. I deliberately made the file this short so as to not provide any presentation patter and to not show the initial portion of the handling as the dollar bill is introduced. I didn't wish to give any clues as to how the effect is performed and so I limited the video from just before the bill transformation occurs and I then recorded the video up until the dollar bill is once again put away. However, if I try to send the 17.9 meg video clip to you, Outlook Express automatically reduces the file size down to 13.7 meg. But, I then cannot get Outlook Express and/or my server to send a file this large (13.7 meg) to you. I keep getting a message that my SMTP server has timed out (despite the fact that I have increased the timer settings to 5 minutes!!) I am using Adaptec's VideOH! DVD (USB 2.0) video capture device with Sonic's MyDVD software. I tried to use Windows Movie Maker but it "can't find" my video capture device. Go figure. I'm going to try to get Windows Movie Maker to recognize my video capture device because Windows Movie Maker has a number of settings (including an email setting) that I know will significantly reduce this file size. If some of the guys on the Café cannot offer suggestions as to how to reduce this file down to a low Internet quality (like at about 400-800 Kb), the only way I can get this to you for review is to put it on a CD and send it to you via snail mail. So, for any of your guys out there that post your own videos, any suggestions as to how to reduce the size of this video down to a manageable "Internet level", would be appreciated. Please PM me with any syuggestions. Thanks for any info. Mike P.S. Koz, The 80 meg file was both video and audio of the presentation from start to finish (I started from the "Grandpa's Dollar-Routine" thumbnail (i.e., the portion of the DVD that does not include performing the effect for the spectators). I can start the video clip at any place you want and I can make the clip with or without audio. So, if the above described 17.9 meg clip w/o the audio is not what you want or where you want me to start the clip, just let me know and I'm make a new clip as you direct. Just keep in mind that anything else you wish will add to the file size.
