Is there any way or gimmick that will allow me to let a person think of any card, and me be able to read there mind?

Can you be more specific? Are you talking about pseudo mindreading or actually being able to get into someone's head and read his or her thoughts?

The best "gimmick" that's out there is the Brain W... deck or the Inv...... Deck. They do pretty much what you asked for, from the participant's perspective. But there is so much written on this concept. Do a search on the Café. Type in "thought of card", or "think of a card".

Read Roger Crosthwaite's brilliant book 'Roger's Thesaurus'. There you have a whole section on 'Think a card' with wonderful methods and amazing routines. I use some of them.
The goal of this section is to come as close as possible to the simple think of a card effect without naming, drawing or writing down anything. ON is that you just fan the cards in front of a spectator. She just THINKS of one card and you name the card. The section describes in a clear way all the psychology in thin a card effects. Highly recommended Regards THomas |

Of course there is a very old gimmick that allows you to place a slip of paper into a cup, ask a person to name any card, and then remove the slip (or pour it out into their hand) to show that you had written the name of their thought-of card on the slip.
No deck of cards is even needed. (Think Corinda and Annemann.) Adam |

I'm with adam... I do it the same way and get fantastic reactions. No deck required.

Thanks Adam for bringing that classic up. I believe it is Annemann. May have to look at this one again. I used a coffee cup when I did it. Doesn't it involve an index?

It does indeed involve an index....and it is Annemann. (THE JINX No. 82, also in "Practical Mental Effects", pg 78)
Not many people use these any more in my experience, but they allow some killer prophecies! Adam |

There are psychic readers here at the Café; perhaps they can read minds.

"...Put a card face down on the table, then ask a spectator to name a card that comes to mind. They name it...you turn it over, proving you knew the card they thought of! Then, you do it again! For the third time, you put the card down. They name a card. They turn it over. It is the card they named!...no collusion or stooges. There is no sleight of hand. I do not switch the card. Furthermore, this is not a "dream" effect - I do it all the time."
In the section "Test Conditions Card Magic", in the book "Dynamic Mysteries", by Richard Osterlind. It really *is* that good... Lee |

Totally agree with Lee. Its called 'Mirycle thought projection' on page 37. Also do it quite often and it stunns them.

The_houdini_jester, if you can get hold of a copy of Bob Bakers excellent book there is a routine for stage use that has what you are looking for. No props (cards or otherwise). No writing (by participant or performer). Just mind-reading.

Lee, why did you have to bring that up!!? That effect (and book) is too good for general consumption!
Many, many gems in that book, if you can find it that is! Anyone know if it'll be in Mr OSterlind's new DVD's? Simon |
