Just for the record, I have been performing Francis Tabary's Rope Routine and all I can say is: IT KILLS! I performed it for the executive commitee of Coca Cola on Monday and got not one, but three rounds of applause! Yes it took a while to learn and a few dozen times of actual performance before I got smooth at it but it was and IS worth it! This routine alone got me a second gig with Coca Cola upcoming in a couple months!
Thank you Mr. Tabary! KW |

I posted elsewhere that I think the look is way more original than the Fiber Optics routine of so many enthusiastic posts here! I don't understand why there is so much enthusiasm on the Fiber Optics and not Tabary - To me he is really the first "new" thing to come along in many years. I wonder - Which of the routines did you learn and perform? I have 2 of the videos and I recall 3<?> routines? Thanks - Brian |

I just picked up his book and I can't put it down. this is by far one of the best magic books I have ever purchased. (ok, you didn't mention the book, but I'll rant all the same) some of the bits in his rope routine are just amazing. that routine is pure gold. good on you for getting it down. I can't praise it enough.

I have both Tabary and Fiber Optics - similiar but different - if one was to master both routines you would be great at rope magic.

I do version with moves I learned from Tabary and Shoot Ogawa's rope routines. I love the concepts and I think Tabary is simply amazing with ropes. I LOVE the effect where the one rope "melts" into the other, that killed me every time I watched it.

Just for the record. I learned from Tabary's video as well as his book. I ordered the book six months before it's release and was lucky enough to have one of the first copies shipped anywhere. Both the video and the book are a perfect match. You can see Tabaray perform his award winning routine and then you can learn the Physicology behind each progression of the routine. I thought I had the routine down UNTIL I got his book. Only then did I realize that I was not presenting it in the correct manner and I did perform a couple of the moves differently from what he teaches. It was only after studying both the video and the book did I turly get it. Just in case you are wondering: I perform his award winning rope routine as he but I have removed the sliding knot part. I added patter and a few facial expressions but all and all, I keep this routine pretty much to the organial as Tabaray performs it. I begin the routine "light-hearted" and finish (with the small rope melting back into the large rope)very very slowly and somewhat serious in nature. It never fails to get anything but a GREAT reaction from the audience. After all the pratice and after performing it a few dozen "shaky times". It has become my favorite in my show. On an average I now get not one but three+ rounds of applause everytime I perfrom this wonderful routine. So, for those who want to learn this routine. STUDY and STUDY HARD. It is worth every minute of your time. I have booked shows on this routine alone.
THANK YOU MR. TABARY!!!!!! KW PS: I am a left-handed magician so, I mix up the moves from one hand to the other ....can you say: "PHUN"? |

The format of the book is revolutionary. Using mainly cartoons with small amounts of text the flow of the routine really shines through.
What's the best vid to get to see the routine being performed? |

Kudos again kenw on getting this down. I think both formats are great for learning. I lean towards books a little more because it forces me to think it through on my own, but you can't beat seeing it done on the tv and rewinding it to get it down.

Christmas came early this year...
I just picked up the book and started working through it. It is not a book for beginners. It is a book that makes a difference. His notes on why he performs certain moves certain ways are enlightening and solid. Good show all around!
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

I differ in opinion.
I picked the book and the video as a beginner. Never had any trouble with it. Well, not magic beginner, but Tabary was my 1st rope magic video / teachings . Now, I perform this almost daily. |

Do you use the length of ropes as described in the book? Ian |

Very good routine but difficult to master

Ithomson, I do not use the same length of rope that T. does. I keep the smaller piece as is but I have cut 12" off the long rope. It seems to help me a great deal during the performance. Bending down to "reach" to the middle of the rope looks and feels a little more natural. The ONLY possible slight problem is that sometimes during the move where the "ends" (and middle), are place into the jacket pocket and a knot is tied into the rope while holding only the middle, this shortness of the rope now makes for a smaller "area" to work in. I had to practice to make sure that the "ends" (and middle) of the rope stays IN the pocket. Besides that. THIS EFFECT HAS BECOME MY FAVORITE!

Joshua Jay does a 'rope stretching' gag that can work as an opener to the Tabary routine. He shows a short rope and pushes down on it using his foot to make it 5-8 feet long (and the rope is in the proper 'configuration' to do Tabary). Mike

While the Tabary routine is beautiful I find his work more of a good source to learn new and amazing things you can do with rope to create a routine. I used to primarily do the "swan lake rope," Jeff Sheridan's routine, and have had only success with it. I find now that the most rewarding thing you can do is work out your own veriation.
