Just wondering if anyoe else has used Eduardo Kozuch's wonderful artistic fish in mentalism? I have found that blendig this trick with a mentalism routine plays quite strong. I have a young lady stand up I the audience, and I ask her to think back to her childhood and her first childhood pet. I ask her what it is ( thanks to P.S. I know this in advance). Then instead of drawing the image of the fish I write the name of te fish on the board. At the conclusion of the trick a real live goldfish is produced.
This plays huge! I almost regret tipping it....ah well....

I have seen this done without preshow with cards. The cards have different objects on them, the performer picks a fish bowl with no fish. Bowl is made to apear, with fish in it, and then there is a fish on the card, or the other way around. I can't quite remember. But I would take out the pre show.

Pardon me for saying so, but I have a hard time envisioning a serious mentalist doing such an effect. That is NOT to suggest that it is not a clever trick or that it is not entertaining -- only that it strikes me as "mental magic" (which can be fine in the right situation/context) but certainly not "mentalism" (at least not as I understand it).

Agreed. I am working on moving out of magic and mental magic and into pure mentalism. The more "tricks" involved in a routine, the less credible the mentalism is. JM2CW Cheers FRank |

What makes you cringe? Ah After rereading the thread I see you were the original poster. Please enlighten me... I'm open to differing ideas and oppinions. Cheers Frank |

The fact that a mix of magic and mentalism does NOT work is something that I realized shortly after this post .
the original post is quite contrary to my current phillosophy. thus making it cringe worthy. j

The more I get to know magic the more I realize that a magic effect can have either an emotional impact or an intellectual impact. Very few magic effects have both. Let me explain. If you show a six of clubs and a 4 of clubs and you change both to the seven of clubs and the 3 of clubs, you have created the following effect: A pip moved from on card to the other. Both duos still add up to ten. That is an effect that is registered mostly on an intellectual level. Here is an emotional one. A random card changes into the four aces. This effect is registered more on a gut level. It makes no sense but obviously something has happened. Both effects usually go on: The first one usually has the seven of clubs and the three of clubs transformed into the ten of clubs, which is again pretty intellectual. The second effect usually has the first card being produced from the pocket, or reversed in the deck.... Again this makes no sense, but still gets great reactions despite the fact that it has no inner logic. Now here is my theory... because emotional effects register on a gut level it never gets challenged by the brain and the lack of any motivation is never revealed. Short: People feel entertained. Intellectual effects however are perceived in the brain, ergo do get challenged therefore any logical inconsistency gets noted. What exactly makes up an emotional effect and what an intellectual one? Well I guess it is the visuals. When you pull a bunch of spring flowers from a piece of silk nobody asks why... It just happens. Because the visuals and the impossibility are so overwhelming it reaches far deeper than just the mind. it goes to your heart. Which.... implies that an emotional effect is stronger than an intellectual one. So what am I saying?... Well how about this: You don't need to motivate your effects if they are strong. All you need to motivate over and over again are the sleights and moves. What do you think? Best Ray |

I never said it doesn't work. I feel that it can pull down the strength of mentalism. A magician is already a "trickster" as it were to the lay public. My take on a mentalist is he/she is in that gray area of "what if". If you do a mentalism routine and end it with a "magic trick/effect", I feel the whole routine and or show gets lumped into the "It's just a trick" catagory. I'm pretty new to this still, and learning, so I am trying to boil things down to as simple as possible. JM2CW Cheers Frank |

Like Frank, I didn't say it wasn't clever, wasn't entertaining, didn't have an engaging or emotional hook -- just that IMO it isn't mentalism. Others are entitled to their own opinions.

This line of logic leads to the odd conclusion that pulling a bunch of flowers from a silk is stronger than revealing thoughts known only to members of the audience because the former appeals more to the emotions and the latter to the intellect. I would argue that the exact opposite is true. Good thoughts, Bob (Also - when I see someone pulling a colored feather duster or paper flowers from a foulard, the effect bypasses my heart and goes directly to my stomach. ) |
