Hey guys,
I am looking for a good ring on rope/string routine. I am a complete novice to this section of magic. So sorry if any of what I say is really stupid, I just don't know... What do you like? A nice size ring such as from a magic store or a ring worn on peoples' fingers? Are the moves all the same with both size rings, or similar? Which one gets the better reaction? Or are they two totally different routines, unable to be compared? Who has the best routine? I heard Earl Nelson has a great one..? Thanks a lot guys, much appreciated! (oh, it would be used for close-up, and table hopping type setting)

I'm a huge fan of Gregory Wilson and his Ring Leader has got to be my favorite borrowed ring-borrowed rope (shoelace, ribbon, whatever) routine that I've come across specifically for beginners. He teaches some very basic moves and a REALLY good routine. You can watch a video on Penguin Magic, but the last I remember, it was sold out.
Have fun! ~Jonton

Yes, Ring Leader isn't available. If it was, it's all you'd need. It's a video ENCYCLOPEDIA! of finger ring/string moves. I had to purchase mine a few months ago on a magic auction website. I went to Google.com and typed key words like "ring leader auction Gregory Wilson". I bought it from a kid in Australia.
But, by the time I got that in the mail from Australia, the following videos came sooner and told me everything I needed to know for my own routine (and I did extra research too) VIDEO: Jay Scott Berry's Ring/Symphony VIDEO: Diamond Jim Tyler's Pocket Full of Miracles PRINT: Harry Loraine's Apocalypse series Also, hopefully one of our members will answer your thread here: Vinny "The Godfather". He pointed me in the right direction and helped me very, very much when I was new to this area of magic about 8 months ago. |

First thing to understand is that Ring and Rope or Finger Ring and String are two different things. One uses a large ring 3-5" and "rope" while the other uses a finger ring and shoelace, string, cord, etc. There are moves that overlap but most are unique to one or the other. There are, also, variations using nuts (Giovanni) and washers, chinese coins etc.

I had the honor of being taught some basic moves personaly by flip just last week at a magic convention. He is a great lecturer and performer and also an excellent teacher.
I bought both his dvd's on rope magic (one old and one new) - in fact I am watching them right now. his videos are very well made by L&L and he is very clear and easy to follow. Dani |

I don't do the routine using a piece of rope. Its just to big and clumsy for walk around. I'm worried about knocking over glasses.
I use a small ring and ribbon. Using the spectators finger ring is surely the best idea, and you can vanish it at the end. I think its important to keep a routine which is basically the same effects short as well. |

For walk around I use both the finger ring off cord and the 3 inch ring off rope. Eric DeCamps rotine on his video is very good using the large ring. For a finger ring routine try Wilson's Ringleader or Miller's Relentless Ring Routine. Aldo Colombini also has some nice large ring off rope moves.

I find that some of Aldo's rope and ring stuff, especially Still Ringing, works well for a close-up situation. I don't do all of the effect, but combining two or three of the moves make for a nice short routine.

I have gotten tremendous mileage out of a routine entitled "Full Circle" I don't know where it is available. I learned it from Rick Castro several years ago.
