Trap doors or spandex are a couple choices.

Wizzzard,
You might want to check out the Illusionworks video serious. (Randwoodbury) Paul Osbourne also has a ramarkably huge collection of blueprints available. I personally like traps far more than spandex.

I see it both ways and have some illusions that differ. For me it all depends on the illusion. If it's a tiny crystal casket your gal just barely fits into to appear. Then spandex would is a better bet for a faster more startling appearance. Where as traps give you stability and no worry about positioning and balance. I think it all depends on the effect and the illusion.

I'm going to agree with Chris.I've used spandex in several designs that were eventually swapped out to traps. Traps tended to work MUCH better. I'm seeing spandex on props with need for fast entrance for vanish from a zimmerman base or as such - I find traps work better but I guess its a mater of design & opinion. Also: you need to ask if you want audience close to the prop. I'm trying to design stuff so that people can be close to the prop and no see traps or spandex. Matter of opinion I guess.

I don't worry about people seeing the traps. I used to, until I saw a Copperfield show from the balcony. His traps looked like he made no attempt to hide them. They were plainly visible, as were tracks that moved ojects in/out (like motorcycles.) Apparently, people don't look there, or if they do, have no idea what they are seeing. I figure, if the best in the biz doesn't deem it important, I probably shouldn't lose sleep over it either.

Starrpower,
I have to disagree with, "I figure, if the best in the biz doesn't deem it important, I probably shouldn't lose sleep over it either." Your job as an artist is to learn from those mistakes, not copy them. I think you should be trying to improve upon what was done wrong rather than assume that it's "ok" just because Copperfield chose to ignore it.

Again (dang chris stop being so agreeable) I agree with chris: As designers - lackluster of what the "big boys"
have been doing are unacceptable for today's standards. Again: I'd designed mine so people can form a ring of people around a prop or be walked up to.. Holds up to much stricter standard... I think its funny tho that DC's props from that angle are so visible. Actually during Uknown forces you can clearly see the slit in the table on the fan when the camera pans up close to it right before the light sweep into the audience. same as the vertical asrah for the masked moth illusion he does - Evean on camera they are clearly visible... |

But why let people walk up to them? What's the point? If people are looking at the traps during the show, you're not doing your job as a performer. And after the show, you have no obligation to leave an illusion for inspection, and I don't think it's a good idea. Once the show's over, it's over.
I still say, "Don't sweat the traps." That's not to say you should do a poor job on 'em, or intentionally make them visible (which is what you seem to suggest I may be doing, Chris), but I don't let them cause me undue concern. |

Say what you wish, the end result(s) speak for themselves. Traps or spandex - just depends on the product...
Each one works well for its own use...as SP clearly states. I really wouldent defend one or the other, just stating what we had done in the past. |

On the Special where he floated over the canyon there's an illusion with 2 kids- its about birds..anyway they are on a park bench and the trap is so visible its not not magic- its a totally different sade from the rest of the bench.

Hey guys! back to the traps... I am like very new to all this, and would like to have a list of basic materieals(ie hinges etc) for a basic trap where to get them, how much they cost and any other advice you think is nessicary. Thanks
