I have used my Collector's Workshop "Jumbo Sidekick II" successfully for my adult shows over the past 10 years. I have never tried it on a kiddie show. I understand that you don't use the gun for kids but trigger the movements using the remote provided while the child is holding a wand. I have never even used the alphabet deck provided with it.
I plan to include this soon for my other repeat kid shows. Do any of you use the Jumbo Sidekick in your kid shows? How do you present your routine with this?

Unfortunately most of the humor of the sidekick has always come from a spectator not being able to aim the gun. The "out of control" wand sounds fun I hope it works for you. I am not familiar with Jumbo II but it would be funny to have cartoon faces on the cards looking for a specific one, maybe a charactature of yourself. When the card finally appears it is sporting a giant handlebar mustache which falls off on cue similar to the extra pip in the sidekick I am familiar with.

Just the opposite for me, I've never used the playing cards with my Sidekick II, always the alphabet deck! The wand works very well, and you can even use a different type gag wand for each phase of the routine.

Just in case anyone's ever looking for an alternative to the wand for jumbo sidekick, something that would be appropriate for kids, I've got a suggestion that I'd like to share. Obviously using what is claimed to be a real gun is controversial these days, even for adult shows, and especially for kids shows. So what I use is a toy water gun. Before doing the trick I demonstrate that it's a water gun by squirting the volunteer some, this always gets a good laugh (I always warn that the volunteer will get wet, and give them a little present afterwards). So that the water gun can be used for the jumbo sideck effect, I tell the audience that I'm going to change the setting on it so that it doesn't squirt a stream of water, but rather a tiny drop of water really really fast. I actually just set the gun down to have them choose the card, and then hand them an identical looking gun that's disabled so that it doesn't really squirt. Doing it this way also allows for some more laughs. When the flowers go flying, I usually say "I appreciate that (Bob), but I already watered those flowers today". Or when the table cloth falls I say "I appreciate that (Jack), but that table cloth did not need to be washed". It's a lot of fun and always gets a lot of laughs. One time after the show the kids kept asking me to squirt them, I had to go get more water, I was wishing I had a bucket.
Anyways, just a suggestion. |

You know what they say. "If you want to burry an idea just put it in writing".... For the 40th time.
Get an Airzooka http://www.zerotoys.com/product-p/az01.htm It shoots a stream of air so there is a plausible reason "things" happen. To sell the idea, I have the volunteer try a few test shots as someone holds-up a SNARF (another bit of business) then pop a few spectators with some air so the audience knows the Airzooka works. I painted mine green with gold accents. It looks like a Buck Rogers space toy & no one can complain.

Did you get one or is your model an earlier sound-activated model?

The one that I use a custom homemade version, sortof a cross between the standard jumbo sidekick, and the one David Copperfield used. The water guns are just ordinary toy guns. I activate the gizmos with a remote control.

The Airzooka looks nothing like a gun and doesn't look like a magic wand, which has been sold as a TV remote control. Having a non-threatening device which isn't electronic, I think, is the answer.
