What is your opener before you come out with your illusion? Do you just come out and present the illusion itself or do you show a fast trick before it.
I sometimes start out with torch to cane or cape with flowers. I know it really depends on the illusion but maybe some of you would like to share your presentations.

I usually walk out with a streamer silk around my neck and produce a fantasio candle followed by a bottle of wine. I've also used the ol' large objects from a briefcase trick a number of times.
As you said it does depend upon the show but I find it best not to change the opening effect too often. I can lead to opening with unpolished work and thus beginning on a low note.

You can't go wrong with a "fire" opener. I enter with a lit torch which I use to light my otherwise empty palm on fire....then blow out the fire turning it into a red silk. I then wave the silk over the torch which in turn becomes the cane.
It's quick, flashy, and makes a statement to the audience that things are ready to begin. Credit to Jeff McBride for the flash silk appearance in the palm. Clever, easy, fast and in his Stage Magic video series. Cha Ching! |

I think it depends upon the venue. If you are doing a theater show and everyone is seated, go right for a big, flashy illusion; perhaps the appearance of yourself. However, in many less formal situations, people are still milling about or arriving, and I like to do a few smaller effect first before getting into the "big stuff." Typically, in banquets and such, I prefer to open with NO magic, but a joke or something else to get the audience aquainted with me.

I'm still putting my stage show together, but at this point I like the idea of starting with Kevin James' wonderful Bowl-o-Rama, then going into a linking ring routine, following with McComb's half-dyed silk routine, and then going into my first illusion (Owen's sawing a lady in half). Any suggestions?

Yes! I do both. If it is one that is music driven, I go straight into the illusion. However, if it is one that requires any lines, I warm the audience up myself. Nothing kills a great major illusion like a poor introduction. Local MCs are risky business. Things there are seldom as planned. So I try to get some space. That space can come from the music intro or a little time playing with the audience myself before the curtain is opened.

But do any of you feel an illusion show should start with only a fullscale illusion ? Just askin ?
