I have been reading lots of post on the Café and some don't match up. I have some questions about music copyrights when performing.
1. Do you need copyrights for pre/post show music 2. Do you need copyrights for events that you are not getting payed for. (ex. charity work or fund raiser) 3. How do copyright rules work when performing at birthday parties, camps and schools. What if they were private a party. 4. Same things go with movie soundtracks because I thought I read you didn't need any copyrights. (don't know for sure. just a thought!) 5. When performing at a theatre how do things work. Do things change if it is a very large one or small one. Last one 6. Where can I get copyrights. I know about copyright free music and us some but I want answers on these questions. If you know a place on the Café where one of them is answered please give me a link. Thank-you for your time! Lucas |

Hello, Lucas!
It's certainly understandable that you're finding copyright info here that doesn't "match up". Mostly, that's for two basic reasons. The first reason is that some of the apparently contradictory info is NOT contradictory, but the reasons are not really explained. The second reason is that some of the info is wrong. Copyright laws protect all recorded music, and the use of copyrighted music is subject to permission from the copyright owners. For the ins-and-outs of copyright law, don’t rely upon hearsay, or on any exceptions or workarounds you may read about: Check out http://www.cmrra.com, http://www.socan.com, http://www.harryfox.com, http://www.ascap.com, or http://www.bmi.com, or the performing rights organization in your country. Some venues pay an annual fee for the use of copyrighted music, and I think you're okay there (see above paragraph). Otherwise --- you guessed it --- see the above paragraph. A private party is subject to the same laws, and it doesn't matter if you're being paid or not, or if the show is for a charitable organization. By the way, Lucas, doing an online search of my local library system, I found 60 books that included info on "music + copyright". Cheers from Toronto!
