I was looking for plans for the "Vanishing Radio". I believe the 'Osbourne Black' book has them anywhere else?

I do not believe there are any plans for this. Unique Magic Studio in England use to sell a version. I bought one and sold a few years back. It would be easy to make if you have a table saw. The hard part is gettin the face plate to look like a radio.
Then most radios are not big box types anymore. The only modern one I have seen is from Italy. |

Yes Ed alonzo uses his to end his vanishing bandana routine. I was thinking about making one, but like wmhegbli said, it is hard to find those kind of radios now adays.
Here is that effect, just an antique looking radio: http://www.owenmagic.com/Classical/Vanis......dio.html Here is one that looks more modern: http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/customer/pr......p;page=1 hope this helps! -Matt Ferro

Too bad the designs have gone so much forwards...the more modern version looks kinda ridicilous and if there are kids in the audience, its possible that they have never seen a radio like that and wont believe it is a radio.
The Owens version looks really nice but would fit only into a show which has other props of the same style. Making a modern vanishing radio wouldn't be too problematic though. Granted, it needs more thinking if one needs a version like the classic, propably a thicker table as well due to the curved shapes. You could use the old method of a radio fixed to a tray. Simple and effective.

There are a rough plan for an old style vanishing radio in Osbornes Illusion Systems Volume 3 which is a routine including the finale production of a girl. Hope this helps.

Perhaps you could get ahold of one of those to cover the vanishing radio with and it would solve the problem of painting or trying to paint it to look like a radio. now this advice would be for the artistic challenged people like myself (I'm either artisticly challenged or lazy not too sure but I'm too tired to figeure it out ) enjoy!!! Does anyone remember the one Seigfried and Roy performed some years ago? After the vanish, they picked up the Plexi-table and looked through it... It was awesome...from my memories!

My favourite vanish radio was one used by FRANKLIN at FISM when he won the championship ( I think in 94). It was incredible. He used an old fashioned radio (looks like a juke box) but dates back to early 20's. It fitted his act and you saw the radio through the cloth as he covered it.
I have never seen one since and would be interetsed to know if this was a 'marketed' item or who invented it.

I believe Franklin's was a custom made prop. I have photos of him doing the act.
It fit in with the decor and theme of his act which is a problem with most radio effects they just don't fit. Even the old vanishing boom box is now dated with IPODs. Shoot you can vanish an IPOD in a topit. Not much of a mystery there. Richard

Vanishing an IPOD in a topit... that's funny Richard! I would be intrested to see what Franklin's vanishing radio looked like. I had a great idea about a "bridging the old with the new" effect a while back. I will not give specific details as it will eventually become my competition routine.
Basically, a magician in a tux-and-tails enters the stage and performs a classic manipulation routine to the music playing on a record player on stage... After some time the record skips continually unil the skiping emerges into a modern hip-hop beat. The magician covers the record player in a shimmering (more modern) foulard and vanishes it... The foulard is brough up to cover the magician's body and is swept away to show the magician in modern day costume... It is kind of a way to fit a classic manip act into a modern show and still give the underlaying message of the magician of yesterday has evolved to the extremem magi of today.... Bryan |

I will try to find the negatives or print on Franklin. As I remember it was the old hump back style.

Love the concept Bryan, loads of possibilities!
There was a small vanishing radio which you brought out (pocket sized radio) and it vanished at your fingertips, it was on an elastic pull. You could possibly update something like this with a 'fake' ipod. Because my act is set in the early 1900's the older the radio the better which is why Franklins look of the radio (even though his was a 50's type Lollipop theme) would be better for me. I found a real working radio with the same shape today, I already perform a vanishing radio (old looking style) but want to try and make it more 'impossible'. The idea of seeing it through an opaque cloth really sells the fact it is still there right up until the end.

One old timers tip. ..make the cloth a striped pattern. For some reason, it gives the impression that you can see through the cloth.
BTW, the vanishing radio plans are in volume 1 of Jack Hughes World of Magic. It is a box like vanish a la Harbin. Richad

I picked up a copy of Osborne's Illusion System 2, and in fact, it does not have the vanishing radio effect. It actually has the "Radio Illusion" (as does the Black Book) which is a Dollhouse Type production of a girl from a jukebox.
I have contacted Owen Magic to find out if the plans are included in either the Thayer or Owen books, or available separately. If anybody has an "old fashioned" radio vanish -- and is looking to sell it -- I'm in the market. Many thanks. Scotty |
