Hi folks!
Does anybody know anything about an illusion, performed with a huge gallow standing on stage. I once saw a magician in germany performig such an illusion. But this is years ago, as now for years I can't find this guy or any further information on this subject. I would be very pleased if someone could give some information on this bizarre illusion. Thanx to all who can help!

Lance Burton use to perform this illusion, I'm not sure if he still does. But you can find the illusion plans direct from http://www.osborneillusionsystems.com/. I hope this is what you are thinking of.

I haven't seen that one myself, but the rock singer Alice Cooper used to hang himself on stage every night of the "Killer" tour.
I can PM you some pointers on that if you need it.

Also.... Brett Daniels performs a cool type of gallows illusion where he hangs by accident then levitates back up it's cool it's HUGE and not the illusion you're thinking of but like I said it's hella cool

Also called Executioner's Dream. The one on magic auction is actually the one previously owned by Lance. That particular prop on magic auction may require a trap in the stage, as I noticed it is missing the second set of stairs. I'm not sure. A similar illusion was exposed on a masked magician special using a guillotine instead, but the principle is the same.

Just wanted to add that I remember reading an article about Virgil touring with this illusion in his act. However, the prop was so large and cumbersome to transport that he purposely left it backstage at a theatre while touring. The article had a photo of the prop in performance. It was Thayer built and absolutely gorgeous! The Osborne plans seem to be a copy of the Thayer design.

Thanx a lot guys for this whole bunch of info.
That really sounded eerie and interesting to me. I’ve just checked Osborne’s and I think I like this kind of stuff. But I have to say, that this is not the illusion I was looking for. Also, this one seems to be too big. Even though I play a lot of Variety-Shows and theatres up to 400 people. Perhaps a closer description would be helpful... I’m going to tell how I remeber it: There was that crazy, funny and absolutely black humored guy having such a THING standing on stage. At the end of his show, he asked a free chosen spectator onto the stage. He explained the whole thing and showed him and the audience 6 single slings which could be attached to the rig by a hook. Every sling had a moveable red (plastic-)cover over the knot (top of the loop). This way, he was able to show, that all slings were solid exept of one which was obviously specially prepared so it couldn’t hold any weight and would break away by pulling on it emidiately. With the cover on, there was no way for the spectator to see which of them was the prepared one. Especially not when the magi mixed them up... Now the spectator had to decide for one of the slings, which then was directly hooked to the rig. Now the magi brought in two chairs. One, he placed directly under the sling and the other one just beside the first one. In a very funny way he convinced the spectator to climb onto the first chair and stick his head through the sling. The magi himself climbed the other chair, making some jokes, if the participant would have chosen the right (gimmicked) sling or not. He held the hand of the spectator and some funny lines were following (like in the typical arm-guillotine presentation). Then he counted to three and both together jumped from the chairs leaving the participant unharmed. Nothing else than a magicians choice thing but what a way to sell it... I know, many performers will shake their heads and say that you can’t perform such a thing... but he could! The spectators and even the participant laughed their a**** of. This was achieved by the funny but still respectful manner it was presented in. Another time I think , it’s up to the performer and his abillities again, how far one can go. I’m sure I could perform this, but I’m not sure yet if I’m really going for it. I came up with several possibilities of how to make this illusion work, but if there’s some information around, it would be helpful.... Once again, thanx a lot!

What you are describing is Maurice Fogel's "cheating the gallows". The method and presentation was published in a booklet years ago.

I also know of this effect as "cheating the gallows" and from a conversation with Doc Hilford a few years ago I think you pretty much figured this out. It sounds ust like what Doc was talking about and the same method.

In the book Illusion Builder to Fu Man Chu, they describe a hanging illusion as well. You might want to take a look at that, it is not the same as you were describing but it looked very interesting.

That sounds like an excellent illusion.
Just take care and make sure you PRACTISE it first! Not the type of illusion that you can afford to make mistake with.

The gallows were the final act in the Spellbound production where Jonathan Pendragon and Carlton were both lead up to the gallows and hanged, only to appear in the back of the venue after the "hanging". We purchased them from Owen Magic in 1984. To my knowledge they are still available. They have a web site http://www.owenmagic.com
Good luck.
Do not go where the path may lead, but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

For those of you who have seen Lance. Do this, how does it go over with his family audience?
