What did he do? (WARNING....this thread may contain information about creative material that will elicit crys of "why did you post that" amongst some of those of the Café crowd. If you are concerned, please skip this topic and go to the card section. You have been warned!). So,what did he do?

I don't know the name of the routine (Doug Henning did it,Copperfield and Blaine), but remember the routine where you place 4 coins at the corners of your table and then cover them with cards and one by one they move until they all end up under the last card. He did that routine but with no cards...just covered the coins with his hands(sleeves up)...Sometimes making the coins move in unique and quick ways and constantly showing his hands. It was truly brilliant and extremely magical looking.

T-Ray, could you describe what made his performance special. Not so much the tricks but what you remember about how the tricks looked or how he presented them.

The incredible part about his performance was the effortless presentation (it totally looked as though he was doing nothing to make it work). It was simple and perfect. He didn't speak a word, but the visual spoke a million. Just imagine laying 4 coins at the corners of your close up mat. You cover a coin with one hand and another coin with your other hand and one moves immediately to the other hand and both hands are shown empty. Then making them move from hand to hand at will until they all end up in one pile. It has to be seen. Really great work. I'm not a coin expert but the method he used is unknown to me ( I barely have an idea!). I don't know the last time an effect excited me as much.

It's okay T-Ray. The names of the tricks, and even how they are done are not as important has the way they are performed. The barehanded coin assembly is something evolved from David Roth's chink-a-chink. What really matters is that you noticed how he made his magic look. Good going there.

Thanks, I do the Matrix routine (I figured it out when I was a kid, but didn't know it's name). I just wasn't up on a bare handed method. I'll check out what you guys suggested but the host of the Magic Castle show mentioned that David Copperfield had bought the rights to this routine. I hope you've actually SEEN what I'm speaking of. Either way, it was a great performance by a good magician. I'm sure you guys can still relate to being excited about a new magical method (to me).......I wish there was more excitement and astonishment in here instead of elderly arrogance....but who am I? By the way Daegs, who are you?

I saw him perform part of this routine, in "Mysteries of Magic" that aired in TLC years back. His work is rally amazing. Another presentation of the shadow coins that really impressed me was David Williamson's version. The way they make it look is as if they just wave their hands over the coins "casting shadows" and the coins change their locations. It looks like real magic.
This is one of my favorite routines. |

Right. The bigger deal here isn't that the performer did Chink-A-Chink (or some other barehanded coin assembly). The bigger, more important idea, and what I believe Jonathan was looking for, is what T-Ray expressed when he said, "it totally looked as though he was doing nothing to make it work" and "it was simple and perfect."
I would think that's the highest praise one could receive on his/her magic! Geoff

But Jonathon, it's an arbitrary distinction you have drawn between what does and does not constitute a "spoiler". By using your logic from a previous thread on a similar topic, I could justifiably claim that merely knowing the emotion that was about to come, then the effect was spoiled for me. Any dialogue on the elements of an effect, be it over the routine itself or the emotional response elicited would be "preparing" a reader for the effect and thus robbing them from the surprise they would have felt if they were to see the effect without reading anything about it prior to the performance.
May your moral compass guide you true - South West is where the honourable man fare. Pity those who lose their way...

Wonderful, does the guy lecture? Has he offered a video or book? I'm curious about his works now and thought to ask if he has any offerings to the magic market.

From what I remember from seeing him perform I don't know 8 or 9 times in both the closeup and Parlour room at the Castle. He's coin routine is a combination of routines that he's sequenced together. I would say so much that it's not what he's doing that's so magical (aka the effect itself) so much as it it is the aura of presentation around it. Done to music, very mystical looking and sparked with a couple of moments of humor which makes for a really great routine. To tell you the truth, most knowledgeable guys here on the Café would completely be able to tell what he's doing as I, not as knowledgeable was able to figure most of it out. Mostly classic chink-a-chink material with moments of some of Dean's work. I've seen Andrew so many times not cause I want to know method so much as I like people to see good magic performed at the Castle (whenever I catch him I always take someone else to see him to share the experience). Sadly, not enough good magic being "experienced" at the Castle. T-Ray, glad you caught one of the better performers there.

When I saw Andrews name pop up I had to say something...
Andrew is a quality magician with great presence on stage and off. You may remember him as the magician producing a butterfly on an A&E special of the History of Magic. He also did the Gypsy thread. He kind of looks like Kenny G. You want to know about contact juggling? He is an expert at this magical looking skill. http://goldenhands.com/ Check him out. He is one of my favorite magicians

I saw Andrew perform his butterfly effect at the Magicopolis (a year or two ago)in Santa Monica (which is currently being managed/hosted by Dan Harlan, by the way). His performance was astounding! When he produced the butterfly and it flew away....it was incredible and so completely unexpected. He performed the close up act which was followed by Jeff McBride in the Stage performance (Also good). But I must say, it is Andrews performance that I remember best.
I never see much mention of the Magicopolis here.... I have been a couple of times and have had a lot of fun. Dan was great to talk to last time I was there. Very friendly and personable. Darren |

What you guys pick to fight about!
A desciption of he does a matrix in an effortless manner set to music is not the same level of exposure as he did this and then that and then this, and you shoulda seen how he used. . . . etc. Matrix or Shadow coins is a mainstay of magic and they didn't tip what the bits of business and humor he used was, so they didn't dilute it at all. Andrew does a great job being inventive and clever as well as demonstrating superlative control over his chops. If you ever get the chance to see him work, don't miss it. I kind of wish they (Jim and Darren) hadn't mentioned the butterfly though, because that is one surprise no one expects, until now. Kirk Grodske. |
