Hi,
Hope this is the right place... I have an 'almost mint' copy of the classic Garcia book - dustcover complete etc. I understand it's both rare and quite valuable ? Does anyone have a realistic idea as to its current worth ? Thanks, Jamie.

If you want to sell it, put it on eBay. As far as I know, the Garcia estate has no plans to re-release it.

Thanks - that was my intention. Just wanted some idea of what I should use for the reserve.

I bought one on EBAY in the past year and paid somewhere around $230......ouch! I really don't understand why someone isn't considering reprinting a classic book like this that is in such demand. What is the down side?

I've published several books and can speak to the downside. Publishing is expensive, especially with a book that is such a niche market. I know that a lot of magicians would jump at a book like Garcia's, but there aren't a lot of magicians out there.
A lot of the publishing costs are up front, well before any profit is realized. Publishers will often require that the author relinquish ownership of the book because of this tremendous risk. Of course I'm second guessing the Garcia family here. You'd have to ask them for the real reason. |

I can't speak for Garcia's heirs. There may be some conflicts about who his actual heirs are.

Wow! I'm surprised to hear it's so valuable. I have 3 books by Frank Garcia: Don't bet on it (signed), Secrets of the 3-ball routine, and Super subtle card miracles (also signed)--all paperback. I would be curious to know their worth, though I'd never sell them. I used to see Frank Garcia at Tannen's in the late 70's pretty often. It was one of his haunts, and he showed me several items with cards. He spent some time teaching me the 3CM, for which I am forever grateful. Funny thing ... even though he was much older than I was, he always reminded me of a big kid--just older. He had sort of a baby face. He was a shy man, at first, beleive it or not. I remember he would look me over rather cautiously when I came in, and waited for me to make the first move. If I didn't say anything, he'd turn away. But when I asked him about card magic everything changed. His eyes brightened and took on a mischevious twinkle, his body straighten up, he leaned leaned over towards me, and then showed me some of the most marvelous stuff. I forget much of it now, except the 3CM, which I have always practiced and performed. Anyway, I remember him as a really nice guy; interested in young kids like me.

I've found books that have sold for both more and less than what's listed, but this site gives you an idea on the current retail. Right now the link below has a 1972 HC 1st edition copy of Frank Garcia's "Million Dollar Card Secrets" listed for $300.00

Frank was a very interesting, very gracious man. He was also kind to new magicians. Somehow, he seemed to understand new guys better than other people who had been in magic for a while.
He was also very tolerant.

If you search for Frank Garcia's 'Sponge Ball Magic' on http://www.alibris.com, there are three copies for sale - ranging from $399.95 to $624.95.

Well, Frank did lift a few paragraphs here and there, and thought nobody would notice it. He got jumped on for that, as well. But that was a lot more rampant then than it is now, I think.
Don Alan was really big for pinching other people's material. But he had redeeming social value, too. He had a feeling that even if he had pinched an idea, once he had really routined it out, he had made it is own. Eddie Fields was partially to blame for that. He was the one who came up with the concept of the ID. Don fleshed it out, but it was Eddie's idea. If Eddie had said, "Don, you have to give me credit if you ever write this up," things would be different now.

I just saw a copy of Garcia's Encyclopedia of Sponge Ball Magic on Ron Allesi's site. It's a first edition for $100. Looks like it's in good condition. Here's the link:

EBay has one in auction for one more day. It is currently at $102. I'm betting that it will at least get to $200 and maybe $300.
