Hiya,
Caught DC's show in Singapore last year.. The "Portal" was right above my head when he performed it.. The method is really a great rethinking of an old concept.. It's like "You can clearly see my hand is empty.. but it's "not".."(that's as far as I'll go..) I've seen him live 10 times in the last 5 years.. (seriously..) Most of them where consecutive shows when I was in Australia studying.. Good to see that he and other good magicians are not at all affected by the Fox exposures.. I think DC's leavin' them more baffled now as they think they know the method but his effects couldn't possibly be done that way, you know?

Portal made me literally cry out in shock. I saw it this year in the U.S. , and I still have very few clues as to how it was done. I'm not sure I want to know! I'd put it right up there with walking through the Great Wall of China or vanishing the Statue of Liberty. I mean, they go and splash around in the water and everything!

Too bad he didn't perform "One" when I saw him... And wish he'd change the "long lost father"-script for "Portal", it's overdone and gives something away about the method... Won't say what it is, but it does...

I found portal to be probably the least interesting effect in his whole show...

Quote: Dunno why, but the audience at the show I saw responded a lot better to other stuff. Even the "appearing fish in Goblet" thing got a hugely better reaction than portal did. I guess for a lot of folks, portal smacks of "video magic" which in large part is what it is...On 2002-11-04 15:47, Pakar Ilusi wrote:

Flip, I actually liked the fact that the "Portal" vanish was performed above my head(looked like real magic eventhough I knew how it was done!) but you're right... it does "feel" too much like video magic once they get to the beach... It's just way too incredible to believe, just like DC calling up the late Orson Welles in heaven in another illusion..
lawrenceng, I know you'll enjoy his show! Peace out guys!

Quote: I agree, the vanish is very strong. The video stuff just seems like such a letdown after that stellar vanish. Not to mention the whole "reuniting with his father" plot was really hokey...On 2002-11-07 13:53, Pakar Ilusi wrote:

DC's greatest "magic trick" is in finding a long lost father to be reunited with his son in every single country he tours! Lol!

I agree the vanish is amazing but the father bit is unnecessary. I was very impressed by his appearance in the begining of the show. WOW

Irishmagic & Flip...I disagree about the reuniting being hokey or unecessary. What would you rather see after the vanish?..just that he is gone? I dont know about your areas show. But here....there were women and even grown men with tears rolling down thier cheeks. So it obviously moved them.

Living Illusions, was it a father and son thing also or was it a different mix like mother/daughter, brother/sister, or maybe long lost lovers?
My objection to that script is that it shouldn't be father/son EVERY TIME because it gives it away a little.. It is still moving emotionally but less "deceptive", especially since the audience would've seen his latest TV Special.. He should, if he doesn't already, mix it up a bit then it'll be more believable, IMHO....

Pakar Ilusi, he does mix it up. There are 5 differant vesions. I have personally seen 3 of the versions. It also includes a niece/Aunt version. It aslo has another father/son version with a differant person. Hope this helps set the record straight.

Quote: Hm, maybe we have a tougher audience where I'm at. The audience seemed quite amazed by little stuff like the "appearing goldfish" and quite unmoved by "portal". The presentation is good, but afterwards, I heard many people in the lobby saying stuff like "It must be done with video editing. That guy must work for Copperfield, etc..." See the description for the effect "one" he also presents. Good solid magic without the trappings of the hokey "Father/Son reunite" plot. Whilst I like DC overall, he seems to rely way too much on shmalzty movie music to set an emotional tone...On 2002-11-11 11:54, Living Illusions wrote:

Ahh....,
He does change the script Living Illusions.. It's ok then.. Although the whole thing still felt like video magic, and this coming from a huge fan of his.. Hey Flip, you're dead on.. "One" was great but "The Portal" could've been better..

The father bit would be so much more poetical if the "fahter" were for example sitting in the audience when the spectator returned to his seat. The hint on the beach could be something like a "message in a bottle" with a photgraph or a poem from "the father", this being captured by the vanished spectator ( ie. he would bring something back from his "disappearance" to the live audience again ( just like with the polaoid story), but then the real kicker would be that the "father" appears in the seat where the "son" was sitting.... or??? |

The only problem with that is the person coming back and the father would be literally surrounded on all sides by members of the audience after the should who are curious to know what happened. As an audience member, I would also feel bad for the father not being able to travel with his son.
I think Copperfield chose that ending partially to provide a logical reason for leaving the audience member there on the island and because it prevents us from questioning the person afterwards. I do agree that a "new" ending could be refreshing for those of us who have seen it before, but I personally like this ending.

I guess Copperfield doesn't need to to book any plane tickets anymore since he can just travel to and fro to anywhere in the world.. Heck, take the crew with him and some of the equipment, that'll save time!

I've seen the illusion performed five times live. Each time was different. There was Father/Son, Mother/Daughter, Aunt/Neice, and I don't recall the other two.
I think having the Dad on the beach was a smart idea. If he brought the son back with him, then the magical appearance in the middle of the audience would not have been as effective. Or atleast that's what I think. I know a lot of people are skeptical and might believe video editing, but every show I've been to the entire audience seemed to be amazed and shocked by this illusion. I had a few friends with me that actually got teary eyed with the reunited family. I think the illusion is great! :subtrunk:
