Wow, this thread's still getting hits!
On a lighter note, I'm sure DC didn't have any plants in the audience, or vegetables for that matter!!!! Oh, ok.... I'll stop now....

For certain effects that DC does, he would have to have plants in the audience.
If he had plants in the volley ball portion of the show, he would have to not sell tickets to whole sections in the theater. I can see using a few plants, but up to 100? I don't think that's a good thing to do when making your money from ticket sales. As far as the father/son being reunited, DC has stated many times that he is trying to take magic "to the next level". Look at his staff- he creates each show like a miniseries drama. I bet everything is written on story boards and tested before ever being rehearsed on stage! He dances with each emotion that you have, and manipulates each sensation that he can find with words, tone, music, expression, rain, wind, and lighting. And by doing so, he creates what we all try to......the closest thing to real magic. DC's magic is in 3D, and the rest of us are in 2D IMO. MM

Mr. Muggle,
Er... I meant that as a joke actually (thought it was obvious, apparently not...) Heard Jeff Hobson tell it once while doing his egg bag routine... I know DC has plants in the audience... I have plants at home though... Some flowers etc... (Another joke btw...) ![]()

I will give my two cents. I saw the illusion on two consecutive nights. Different people each time made the "trip". Once the vanish occurred directly overhead the second from the side. I liked the illusion and I thought it was a fine melding of what we are used to seeing on television, with special effects, and what we are used to seeing in a theater.
One negative comment concerning the televised method. The vanish was NOT the same as the live performance. I suspect that what we saw on T.V. may have been akin to David Blanes's massive ammount of elevation for the Balducci, impossible. That being said - I loved it anyways.

Does anyone know where can I learn the principle used in the Portal vanishing?
I have seen it alive and it looked like real magic. No deceptive bases at all! Thanks!! |

So what made the televised version so much different? For all intents and purposes it was the same from the viewer's standpoint, I thought.

I have the same question I have seen it both televised and live and I am curious what you are referring to as different.Knowing the principle involved I do not know why one would change it for TV or live. it's brilliant in both mediums.

David Copperfield has a seamless, entertaining and, for most people, an amazing show. I wonder how many of his critics are doing the volume of shows he is, or have a show that could be comparing in terms of production quality.
While I don't LOVE every illusion he does, I do see the entertainment value and quality for REAL people. It amazes me how many of DC's detractors have seen his shows 5 or more times or have studied video tapes of his show(s). Let's face it, DC is the "Gold Standard" for traveling illusion shows, the rest of us are just swimming in his wake.

I attended his portal show, and I caught the ball, and was the one to go on stage to have my picture taken. It was NOT prearranged in any way. Also, I was watching the vanish from behind, and didn't see anything really unusual. It was a great show.

Hey I have a question. The last time I saw David he was just starting out with 13 and he would make the audience disappear but he didn't bring them back at the end. He said it was because he couldn't figure out how to bring them back and then the show ended there. I thought it was kind of funny. Does he still end it like that?

No they reappear in the back of the auditiurm. My brother happen to be part of that Illusion. It was VERY COOL.
When they reappeared they all had there flash-lights and pointing them in the audience. Reminded me of E.T. Michael

Hmmm....I don't think he played that when I saw him. He just said at the end of the illusion that he hasn't figured out a way to make them come back and then the show ended. Never made them re-appear. I actually think he was being honest. Maybe he hadn't come up with how to have the appear to the audience again, especially in the venue the show was playing where I saw him. It was an arena and not an auditorium.
