O.K. here is the deal. If you had only 20 minutes to do your show. What effects would you do? You need to have a flashy opener, build repore, have audience helpers and a strong closer. This show must be able to be performed in any area with no special set up. What effects would you use and why?

Finger flasher - kids love 'magic fire'
change bag routine (haunted bag) rope thru body - scary, funny and strong mouth streamer - really eye popping I am aware that some Café members might be horrified with these routines but they always storm and I've never had complaints felix |

You would open with Finger Flasher and close with the mouth coil?
could you tell us why you use these? How does finger flasher get the attention and how does the mouth coil bring the show to a strong close? I am just asking, not saying your wrong in these choice I am just wondering why and how they work for you.

I've actually created the show you're talking about.
OPENING: Square Circle production. -- Fast paced, lively music, produce a 3' pole (wand), a couple large items, plenty of silk streamers, and a silk fountain. Multiplying bananas and dream bag combined into a quick, humorous routine. Audience participation piece using two volunteers. I do a prediction piece, but it is designed so kids and adults "get it". Close with what Steve Taylor calls, Awsperational routine. A nice story designed to touch the heart combined with a magical ending. 20 minutes, in and out. Now for the "WHY" Obviously I open with something fast and colorful to grab attention and let the audience know this is going to be good. Producing as much as possible from the small "empty" space adds to the WOW factor. And silk just looks good. It's bright and fills a lot of space on stage quickly. The multiplying bananas is a great way to let me break the ice and build rapport with the audience. It gives me a chance to be humorous and produce a few laughs. The dream bag sequence at the end is fast but adds more WOW to the show. The prediction piece just fits what I'm trying to accomplish in the show. It allows me to interact with 2 audience members directly. This allows my personality to come out more, and it can add a bit of fun if I pick the right helpers. Plus its an easy to understand piece of magic with a nice strong ending. Awsperational piece. I use this to clinch the show. In my case I'm trying to get a message across, and this allows me to do that while also offering a final piece of magic. The effect itself is not the strongest magic, but the story and its message is. -- Touch someone's heart, and he'll remember you. Scott .

Scott,
Sounds great! I find it hard to work with only 20 minutes. It is hard to open, show skill, build rapport, have fun with the audience and have a strong close all within 20 minutes. Within 20 minutes you may only have time for 4-5 effects and that is pushing it. It is over before you know it. I would much rather have 35-40 minutes but I get asked to do a few 20 minutes shows every now and again. When ever I do these I feel like it was 1/2 a show!

Many of the things you want to incorperate can be combined. You can show skill in your opener, and have fun with the audience the whole time.
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

Hi Bill -
Are you asking about our own personal "commando" act, of sorts? Something we can do for most any audience? Th reason I ask is that I can't recall if you specified the customer. For me, sometimes that information makes a difference as to what I would do. What ages in the audience? What size audience? You talked about set-up. Can some of the pre-show prepation be done at home? How about some of the post-show clean-up / reset? Can that be done at home, too? Are those conditions acceptable? - Donald

Silk vanish - lots of fun with the dropping of the silk and look don't see, then there is the impossible location at the end...helps build rapport and they know I'm a fun guy who can do fun things.
Balloon Dog - fun stuff happens and there is audience participation - once again the unexpected ending is magical and the kid get's a giveaway. Vanishing Ketchup bottle - sucker watch me effect that is fun and gets the audience screaming and into the show Snake basket - Pro Viper enough said My bill in peanut routine, which I can't describe but trust me it's a FUN bit of business plus the strongest closer I can think of. |

I think the mouth coil routine I use is awesome, the MC production is big and colourful, kids often say things like 'wow - that is REAL magic' adults love it , its v funny etc etc - its a great ending to a show

It goes to prove once again that it really is not the trick that makes an effect good or bad. It often comes down to your own unique routining and personality you put into the trick to make it entertaining for your audiences. Go above and beyond what others are doing and think outside of the box to give your audiences something more.

Kyle,
You missed the point of the question. I was asking the why you use the routines you use for a 20 minute show. As I stated above a 20 minutes show can be a challange. This is more a theory question and not a list of what you do but why you do them. This proved once again people don't read before they post.

I'm not sure of all the routines I would use but I have a feeling that I would probably use a short clatter box routine with a change bag for laughs and ketchup bottle to pringles! I would use mouth coils probably during my warm-up! I would also probably use Sponge Balls!

And to be perfectly honest, it may run 25 min depending upon the audience and the volunteers I get on stage.
