Hello all. I have been doing magic for years (about 18 since I picked up my first "Magic Kit") and I was just curious as to how you all got started with your FIRST paying gig?
I live in NJ and very close to NYC, about 10 minutes away. Everyone always tells me how I should go on tv and this and that. I just never took my skills any further, and now thinking about it (being 25 years old) why NOT get paid doing what I love doing the most? The problem is, I don't know where or how to start. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks. |

I've always found that when I was nervous it was usually because I wasn't completely comfortable with the material I was presenting. Practice and rehearse over and over until you know your material inside and out - not just the technical aspect of the trick, but the presentation as well. Make sure you have an 'out' if something goes wrong (you can find lots of posts here on that), and practice some more. For me, once I got truly comfortable with my act the nerves pretty much went away. With that said, there are certain things that I think might make me a little nervous. I've never performed on TV or radio - I think that might make me a little nervous if I tried it. I hope this helps. Tony |

TriXter9669,
Do you consider yourself a salesman? Are you rich? I ask this because you can go one of 2 ways. Start calling companies and for the Xmas season banquets. Give them your brochure and if possible a video of you in action. Then sell, sell, sell. Or if you want to be a David Copperfield or David Blaine, go rent a Broadway theater and produce a show. Both the above had backers when they started to cover the financial end. If you do not 'sell' a financial backer on your skills and abilities to put you on Broadway or television then it is up to you to do so. Do you have a show? Have you decided on being an illusionist or a stage performer or a close-up magician in resturants? To put it another way, Are You Ready? |

Haha funny you ask wmhegbli. When I say I have been doing magic for 18 years, that's me just doing them for people, friends and family. I have tons of people that come up to me and go...SHOW MY FRIEND SOMETHING and it goes down the line. In high school, it was the same thing. Therefore, I have nothing but my tons of books and videos and skills. No brochure, no video, nothing.
That's why I'm curious as how you got started. Obviously, you were at the point that I'm at as well. Did you just hit the streets with a camcorder and make a "demo"? I was thinking of that as well so I at least have something to show. I mean, I can go as far as saying, I don't even have an ACT. I can put one together, just linking effects together till they flow smoothly. Also, I only work in close up, no stage for me. If it helps, I studied under ROCCO, who lives like right down the street from me. Haven't talked to him in a while though he is constantly away somewhere performing. |
