I'm planning on purchasing a Swami Gimmick within the next few days. I've never used one before, but it seems that I have three main options in front of me. Those being the traditional NW, a BW, and a TT Writer.
As of now, I'm slightly leaning toward the BW. Has anyone had any bad experiences with these, or is there another type you'd recommend? Thanks in advance, Tony |

Tony:
I think this is mostly a question of personal taste; I would suggest trying one or all of the above to see which works best for you. Also, this topic has been discussed here at great length; you may be interested in some of these links: Boons. NWs. More. Make your own ink writer. |

Tony: You are planning to branch into an exciting aspect of mentalism. You will have to consider a few things when choosing which device to use. For example, how much time you have built into your routines for getting the device on and off; where will you keep it handy; how, when and where you will ditch it when done; how much cover you have for it while using it. I use a bw for stage and tt for close up. Osterlind uses an old style nw and he can get it on and off in a flash after years of use. Don't forget too, that double writing and pocket writing can often be used as substitues for thumb writing. Ask if you have any questions.

I understand there is a Swami which uses biro instead of lead.
I think it was marketed under the name of Tom Thumb... Anyone got this? wulfie |

Boons were not very steady for me.
If you have short fingernails ....well you know. TT is good for me. |

Same here, tried C types and settled for the trusty TT version. Had some problems using it lately. Some spectators have been onto the method, just had to back up and reevaulate everything.
For one thing, I've resorted to single digit predictions from now on. The slowness and sloppiness didn't help my performance. Makes it more believable also IMO.

It also depends on what you want to write, if you want to write words or 4 or 5 digits numbers I think the nailwriter is the best one. In my (very little) experience the nailwriter seems to allow a more readable writing.
If you want to make your own boon writer: Take a button, from your shirt. Stick a piece of lead through one of the holes, so about 5mm sticks out. Stick a piece of blue tack on the other side and attach it to your thumb- your ready to go. You may also like "Super Sharpie" which is self-contained. Best, Guillaume |

Hi all,
Just my 2 cents. I have used every kind imaginable. I have purchased some at outlandish prices. I have made my own. Here is what I have discovered for me. Pencil works just as well as ink. TT are cumbersome and more easily spotted. NW will not work if nail is too short. Boon tends to slip and slide. I currently use NW and do not plan to change. I always search for ways to write as little as possible. Peace, Parson

Does anyone 'change' the blu tac type stuff in their Vernet Writer when it loses its stick ?

I have also tried the tom thumb ink writer and had problems with it (changing ink, leakage etc, I'm sure others have had more success with it) B

I've tried Boon and nail but have settled on the band writer.
The band is SO easy to get on and off, you don't have any problems with it slipping and I get more control over it than I could manage with a TT. I have bought some absolutely hideous band writers, the best way is to get a TT and make them up yourself. Having said that, it really does come down to a personal preference. Cheers |

I use a banjo pick that has been cut down to size and a small plastic held piece of lead from those pencils that are loaded with 12 cartridges that you simply push in from the back when the lead goes down. Cut the plastic to size and shorten the lead. It will last a lifetime and cost $2

I started with a tt and use the Super Sharpie quite regularly. Pocket writing is my latest passion but I always found it difficult to write with a chopped down pencil. Solution? Take the lead holder out of your thumb tip, get a child-sized rubber thumb tip and cut it down so it just covers the nail. Poke a hole in the end and push the lead through. You now have a gimmick that takes up no extra space in the pocket, holds securely but comes off in a flash, and writing legibly couldn't be easier. Just trace the word with the tip of your finger.

Now that's a clever idea !
I must try that for pocket writing too. A tt writer combines with a boon inside. I have been using it for quite some time now. If I don't feel like bringing the whole TT, I just remove the boon version and take it with me...
