Here is the 'secret' behind the magic that most of the onlookers (sometimes even fellow magicians) love to watch.
It has been revealed many times before, but has to be mentioned over and over again.. here it comes: K.I.S.S That's all there is to it, apart from the magic should be deceptive, fascinating and entertaining! Thing is, if they can't se what's going on or get confused, the 'magic' is gone. Many years back I did the *Sidewalk Shuffle* for my ol' friend Joro. He had never seen it before, he neither did se it when I performed it I keept the cards tilted that much towards my own view (must have loved to watch it myself) when doing the Elmsley, he couldn't se the faces of the cards at all.... What a performance.. Another thing I often wonder when seing even very expert performers (they mostly perform for fellow magicians) perform is, that I simply can't follow what is going on. I miss the 'effect' in the first place, a series of miracles mostly, but I get confused.. What's the guy doing? I simply didn't get it appart from probably the climax, the finale, when he stops.. Forget the complicated effects, they can only be appreciated when one does se a such performance a couple of times in a row, that is not a normal performing condition! K.I.S.S., so ppl can follow what's going on Despite of all the movements and moving around of objects on the table, Albert Goshman did just that. Fred Kaps did everything SLOWLY and explained thoroughly what's going on..always! The magic so was much stronger when it happend! Yes, the above is even a reminder for me too!
Learn a few things well.....this life is not long enough to do everything.....
( Words of wisdom from Albert Goshman ...it paid off for him - it might as well for YOU!!!- My own magic is styled after that motto... ) |

Thanks for the tip. This is great advice and a wonderful reminder.
Since I know what is getting ready to happen in an effect, I sometimes rush in certain places, trying not to get caught. As has been said by others, "Why run when your not being chased?" Since the spectator, for the most part, does not know what is about to take place, or where the effect will ultimately end up (the nature of most effects), taking ones time while performing can only make the performance more enjoyable for all. Through practice, I can slow down and enjoy the moment and focus on the reactions from the spectator. What a great tip! |
