Animation for our puppets is very important.
Getting laughs with out words is very important to this nearly normal ventriloqist. I have not heard of your specific request. I read of your response in the Gennii Forum after a Google Search. Although I have not tried that bit, I can picture it in my mind. Whispering can also be very funny between the vent and puppet. Be safe, Harris

If your not old enough to remember it's sad but maybe you can find a video of one of the most hilarious acts of all time...it could be considered Silent Vent...
Rod Hull And Emu Truely one of the greats. Do a Google.

Doug,
Thanks for the link. I am glad I took the time to google Emu. The time on Carson must have been a riot. To bad it didn't make it to the Best of Carson.(too my knowledge anyway) Sounds as if Rod used and early version of the fake arm. This nearly normal guy is guessing it's origin is much earlier than the 70's. (just a nearly normal guess.) My act is tame compared to that wild guy. Last year I got a chip bag clip in the shape of lips. I use it to make a makeshift puppet. It is silent and painful as it kisses /clips to my lips....Of for the art of comedy. Anyone else read the Physical Handbook of Comedy by Robinson... One of the funniest physical bits I saw by a vent was when his puppet ran off stage. This was not the human as puppet but great manipulation by the vent. Be safe, well and creative. Harris

Yep..Rods 'arm' was attached around Emu. If you haven't seen the act you have no idea how violent and rough it got when Emu went after somebody...the 2 UK incidents are the most famous...one guy was really pi**ed off...Emu was a tough cookie!
As to the origin etc. it's there on the internet somewhere...also about his TV kid shows he did...Rod Hull has a large presence on the net though he died quite awhile ago. (Fell off his roof adjusting his TV antenna.) The CLASSIC Carson battle IS available on video...but I can't find where.

I looked up just Rod and Emu.
World Cat service for getting items through U.S. Libraries has some of his kid books but no videos. This time when I search I will include Carson Visual materials. Harris

Heya Harris,
I've been dying to see the carson clips of Rod Hull and the Emu. This is kindof the stuff I've been thinking about for "Sparky" that I showed you. I've looked all over the net and only seen 2 clips of Rod's mayhem. I've looked high and low with Carson/Tonight Show/Emu/Rod Hull in the searches but never seen the tonight show appearances. I know he did 2 appearances. I was fortunate enough to see the time he was a guest with Richard Pryor years ago. At the very last part of the show when they run down the couch saying who will be appearing where, doing what etc. Rod was in the chair and Richard was on the sofa. Rod went first and then with richards turn Richard asked how Emu goes with dumplings. I don't remember laughing that hard when the Emu, Rod and Richard all flipped right over the back of the couch. I know the Emu was pretty wild, but I am really curious to see the others times when the Emu was tame, getting scratched on the head, grabbing items etc. |
