Does anyone have any recommendations for dye tubes? I'm interested in the standard colour-change routine in the Ron Wilson book. Which brand/make/style do you prefer and why?
Thanks for the help Andrew

Dear Andrew,
Rice's Silk King Studios carries three sizes of utility dye tubes with the Al Baker routine included. They are black and made of solid brass. You may see them and review the various sizes on the website at http://www.silkkingmagic.com. Ruth |

It really depends on the size of the silks and the intended routine. I use a Palmo Ball for the Half-Dyed Hank, thus eliminating the need to switch tubes. Palmos have a large capacity; I get 3 15" silks into it or a 4" X 10' silk streamer.
If you're only using two silks, a partitioned dye tube may work best. |

Hi Andrew,
My favrite Dye Tube is the Cammirand Dye Tube http://www.camirandmagic.com/ because of its shape you can hold bigger silks in it than usual dye tube and its shape also makes your hand that is holding it look more natural. Moreover, with their dye tube comes complete and detailed instructions and patter, and it contains a real fooler for your audience since after your "first" routine you tell them that you will explain how this trick works (which gets their attention even more!!!) and you procede to show them how the trick is done but your hand is always empty when you show it to your audience.... I personally never like Dye Tube, that was before Mr. Camirand himself and Gary Ouellet showed it to me. Hope this helps Ronnie Lemieux Montreal Canada

For the non-sleight-of-hand folks out there, Tenyo has an interesting dye tube. The effect is that you roll up a piece of paper in front of the audience, pull some silks out of it, pop in another silk and blow it out the other end a different color. It ends in a shower of confetti.
It's made a nice little addition to my children's show without putting in any more practice time. Plus, it comes with all the (small) silks. |

I use a Palmo too to change an 18" sad face clown to a colorful happy face clown. The Palmo works well with that.

To the guys that use the palmo balls for a 1/2 dyed silk without a tube change:
I want to add the 1/2 dyed silk to my repetoire but I don't want switch to another tube. I currently just use a standard dye tube with 2 silks. The palmo balls that I have seen has just one hole in it making it seem impossible to switch silks in and out. Without giving too much info, can anyone describe the basics using a palmo ball for a 1/2 dyed silk routine. Thanks. Rich B. |

Hi Rich,
The palmo gimmick that I have has two holes, one in each end. It is essentially an expanded around the middle dye tube. I believe a similar item with only one hole is called a hank ball. A video describing the use of the palmo gimmick in a color changing silks routine and the gimmick itself can be found at Duane Laflin's website: http://www.laflinmagic.com/ Differences between the palmo and hank ball can also be seen at this site: http://www.silkkingmagic.com |

Hi, As for dye tubes, I used the one that has a little piece of chamios material on one end. They came with the Harrison Silk blow many years ago. I think Magic Inc has them.
They work just great, with never catching in the tube.

Ian,
I really appreciate the info. Obviously what I saw was a "Hank Ball". I will be purchasing the palmo ball effect. Happy Holidays Rich B. |

I once had a dye tube that worked wonderfully and would like to find another like it. It was a simple flesh colored tube, it had no cloth divider, and it had a bit of a lip at each end. The lip made it easy to wedge the tube onto my ring finger, which made vanishes easy. Does anyone know who made this thing, or whether it's still available? Thanks very much.

JSRovner,
Rubber? It sounds like the dye tubes which come with the Chameleon Silks. I don't know off hand whether or not it is sold separately, but at the price for the set, you might as well buy it and get the silks too. |

Rubber? No, the tube was made of metal. Thanks for trying, though.
The Tenyo effect is called Dynamite Tube, and it's terrific. The illusion is superb (of course - it's Tenyo!), the prop is well made and it's basically self-working. In addition to silk productions and transformations, you can produce confetti for a finale. I think this would be especially great for a kid's show. |

You can use either a palmo dye tube or you can even make one from card or get a metal one with a partition - these are nice

I'm wondering if some of you who are asking about the flesh colored tube with no divider are talking about Rice's Simplex. It's on the website if you want to take a look and see if this is what you need. Also, the Thru the Dye Tube book has a great deal of discussion of uses and all types of dye tubes. Hope this is helpful.

I really like the rubber tube that came with chameleon silks, although it does not hold a lot. I always had trouble getting the metal ones to fit my fingers; and I like the fact that it has a bit of flex, and low noise possibilities.

The size of the tube only matters a little.
I either wedge a finger between the silk and the wall of the tube, or I clip the tube with two fingers. I don't have a noise problem because I don't wear rings, but if I did; I would probably get something to put on the ring to dampen sound. |
