My show = I do several magic tricks with my ventriloquist doll in a trunk on the other side of the stage. Then I get the doll out.
I have him talk and ask questions, between magic tricks, before getting him out. I would like to have a couple of cards or something fly out of the trunk because he is wanting to get out. Is there an easy way to do this? It's a one man show. Could I use a remote? Is a confetti cannon the only way to get it done? What ideas can anyone come up with to help? ventriloquism

You should be able to use a remote. Think R/C airplane or car and let a servo release the catch that holds the spring arm in place that actually propels your object of choice.

I have read (can't remember where) about a magician who uses a car door lock actuator inside a box to throw an object out. I've seen these solenoids for sale on the Internet and they appear to be about 8 inches long and pretty beefy, but I've not used one.

Michael - Thank you very much for the website, that is a great start!! I have never heard of a servo. I'm just starting to TRY to build stuff that I need and can use in my show. If you think of anything else, please don't hesitate to add it.

Dave - Thanks for the info. You did give me an idea on how to throw the stuff out. A box with springs in it and maybe a servo on the catch to let it go. Thanks for the help.

With a motor in the base of the box and a flywheel off-center, you can make the box wiggle and jump around. See my Poltergeist routine in The Wizards' Journal #6 for more details.

Spellbinder - will it show me how to build the box? Or does it just explain the trick?

Have you ever seen a mousetrap racer? Pad the board and you do not get much noise, the pin holding the spring arm is easy to dislodge....
Kay (Still thinking cheap after all these years!)

Kay, no I have not heard of a mousetrap racer. But I LOVE CHEAP!!!!!
I see a small remote control car running onto a track into into a mouse trap. Noise is ok too. More info please. I found a bird that will sing with movement that comes close to it for $7.99.

You could simply use a small mousetrap, they are pretty powerful. Place something on that swinging thing, release and its airborne. Its simple to trigger with a thread, however that might not be feasible. Of course you can remote control that too.
Still, I think you'd need to think about visibility. A few cards like you mentioned possibly don't register with all members of the audience. A silk or two might get their attention-they can be seen easily and remain in air a bit longer. Those you propably could launch with a simple CO2 operated hand-held confetti cannon.
