After much dithering around I finally broke down and bought a silk fountain.
I have folded it the way Duane says to on his DVD. I saw Morag’s Lecture on silks and watched how he did it. I even went back to my Paul Diamond tape. The problem is that I have to shake it quite a bit to get it to open up. I tried tilting it the way Duane recommends, still ended up shaking. Any help would be appreciated. I think the effect is much better with minimal hand movement. Thanks Bruce

(From the files of a mystery silk guy:)
Sew a few very small fishing weights to opposite corners of a couple of the first to open silks. Since they will hang well out of the way the others open more easily. Do not mix lead weights with white or light yellow silks. It marks them! Bob Magi By Sander |

Try clawing from the bottom of the silk. If the silk is heavy enough, it should open up fine. If the silk is too thin however, it will lack the necessary spring to open it easily.
I fold my 8 momme fountains a couple of days ahead when I can to get them to open slower. Richard

Bob,
Thanks for the tip, probably be able to use bb's or any small weight. Steel might be less likely to mark the silks. Whataya think? Richard, Do you mean push up w/ your fingers as you display the fountain? I am still playing with it. Fold it up while watching the tube, stand in front of mirror to watch it unfold during commercials. Thanks guys, I'll try 'em. Bruce

No, you are using your fingers on the outside of the bundle kind of clawing.
I hate the fountain shaken. It should just naturally open. I have never found the need to add weight or even heard of it before now. But if it works go for it. I would dip or coat the metal with a plastic (like grip stuff for tools) so it did not transfer into the silks. Are you using really light silks? Richard

After the outside two silks, things should open on up for you since each silk is turned a different direction. In my silk fountains the inside silks are smaller than the outside silks. (Richard's must be stacked the other way.) Good Luck! Bob Magic By Sander |

Thanks guys, I appreciate your thoughts. I will try the "clawing". If that doesn't work I can always go "nuts"

Mine are all the same size. Other guys put the larger ones on the outside and go to smaller inside.
This whole thing baffles me as I have never had a problem getting it to open, just slow down. Richard

Usually and currently, I don't sell silk fountains. My personal experience in using them is the same as Richard's: that is keeping the progress under control to finish the music. I even keep extra silk fountains available on stage to load behind the original, if I need the time. (Yes, it happens but the audience never knows that! I always have a spare bird too. Sometimes it's needed.)
I do like the first silks to be larger than the final silks except for the very last one (which is loose). The larger silks give better cover and color display. They also take extra room so you don't want to over do it. I like 2 - 24" followed by 18" silks. In my younger days I even used some 12" ones. Since 2002 I steal a rabbit from Lucy in the cover so 12" silks are of no value to me in that routine. (Our current rabbit is 13 lbs!). When Lucy does it she steals an Axtel chimp! Ride a silk fountain for all you can get from it. We have a friend in Vegas that steals a bowling ball! Go for it! Bob Magic By Sander |

I was looking for the effect you see on Richard's web Site. The silks seem to bubble up continously. Sometimes mine seems to stall and I have to get it going. Maybe it's just a matter of practicing w/it to get the handleing down. I have Duane Laflin's DVD. I think he actually says "they seem to bubble up all by themselves".
I guess it may be that I need to remeber the first three rules of magic: Practice Practice again Practice some more Best, Bruce

Put a sock loader in the middle of it and fold a 36" silk into it then fold your fountain around it it makes it a bit larger, not much though and that helps the unfolding of the fountain plus gives you a great finish when you pull out the big silk at the end
