Hiya, Magi:

I use hi-bounce balls for street manipulation and when doing a "complete" vanish will use my right vest pocket as a servante. Despite being fairly adept with both the moves and the misdirection -- I make a sweep across my body, raising the 'loaded' fist while ditching the dirty one -- some spectators will occasionally blurt out, "It went in your pocket." It's a reasonable deduction but also a pain for the Mage.

I've thought of dumping the ditch but like to end clean, with no reasonable reverse engineering possible. Where do you ditch for a complete vanish? What do you say (if anything) when someone guesses?

Leland. I got around this problem in doing my street style billard ball act by something Shimada used to do. That is incorporating a silk into the billiard ball routine and the ending sequences I do.

I now do a sequence where I toss the ball up and as it hits my hand is magically tuns into a silk. The silk is shown and extended over the hand where the ball magically appears again. I then make a well in the silk and apprently drop the ball inside of it. I take the silk by the hand and the ball vanishes as the silk is whisked away. I do other transitional effects, but I end by doing Shimada's ball through silk and then the effect he does where by the ball vanishes as you grab and toss the silk that you have on your shoulder up and over the hand holding the ball. It is hard to explain, but Shimada does it so well and it works wonderfully because it uses logical misdirection. This then leaves me with an empty hand and a silk and the ball in the other.

Because my hand is holding onto a silk.. it only becomes logical to drop the silk (and ball) into my cost pocket or a table etc. to get rid of it in a natural way. By incorporating the silk into the act, it gave me more variation that the audience enjoyed while giving me a great way to use misdirection to conceal or hide or ditch the ball alltogether.

If you do a false transfer into the other hand

and gesture with the hand secretly holding the ball. or make a magical pass

the gesture will be the dump as hopefully all focus will be on your other hand for a vansh

in fact if you do the false transfer and go to bounce it you should get a god vansish it also works good with a topit

I take a wand out of my doc bag with ball(palmed). with wand I count three balls (formaly produced)on table and replace the wand to my pocket (not to the bag). this forth ball is now magicaly produced and the shell fun begins.
now I start to vanish and put some balls back in the bag.
For the last one I do a false transfer and hold my full (actualy empty) hand high. as it goes up in the air my other hand (with palmed ball) goes to look for the wand in my bag. At this point I have two things going for my audience misdirection: 1. the audience see's my hand go up and 2. they see me searching for a wand that is actualy in my pocket. I pretend to search for it in the bag (and drop the ball inside) some more and often get some good response from the audience as they remind me that it is in my pocket.
By now - the ball has gone. I take the wand out and "stuff it" into my clenched fist, slowly open my fingers and the ball has "gone".

enjoy,
dani

another quick one I use for children is to simply give one ball (actually 2 sponge balls) to an assistant and one ball in my hand. I take out a silk for the assistant to cover hisher hand and amediately put my closed fist into the same bag, drop the ball and remove my (still closed fist) with another silk for myself to cover my hand. Due to the timing, and due to the nesseccety of utilizing silks to cover your hand to "do" the magic this looks very natural and leads up to an astounding vanish of one ball from my closed fist.
An axtra laugh as the assistant opens their fist and sees two balls instead of one - that also takes any heat off of my "dump".

enjoy,

dani

I think as long as you have a "Logical" reason to go to your pocket or table etc. then that serves as a perfect logical misdirection needed to ditch any billard ball. This can be picking up a wand or putting one down. It could be the use of a silk etc. As long as you establish a reason to the audience for doing what you are doing, then the logical misdirection will never be caught.

I always, or at least most of the time, use topit, if you can with your costume, then do.
