I liked David Blaine when he was doing his street magic. Hated him when he started doing his 'stunts'!

How can you hate somebody for doing stunts? Hey I prefer his street magic over his stunts...but how can you hate him for it?

I'm not a fan of David Blaines recent presentations but do admire his showmanship. I've read his book and it gave the impression he is an acomplished close up performer. He didn't inherit his money, he earned it as a performer that did magic, so he must be pretty good.

I think David Blaine is a very talented sleight of hand artist.
However, that being said, I find his presentation less than interesting. Downright boring, in fact. His performance persona is so boring that it's difficult for me to enjoy him doing something that, done by almost anyone else, would normally make me sit up and take notice. He should read a book on showmanship, drink some caffiene and stick to the sleight of hand stuff. Television stooges, continually saying, "watch" in a tone that suggests he's either sleepwalking or stoned, and stunts of endurance go a long way toward discrediting the amazing stuff he can do. ...Just my two cents worth. |

Bendy, apparently his showmanship works for TV and it's been the way many newer magicians are copying.
Personally, I don't find it interesting...I'm a huge Bill Malone fan when it comes to performance. Watching Blaine however, you see him come off as this 'mystery' man...even when people start laughing during his effects he just keeps a straight face and blows them away. Then again, you can't impress everybody right? I'm sure if you uploaded a video of some of your performances there'd probably be many things Blaine is better at. That's my 2 1/2 cents |

A camera crew alone can get amazing reaction from specs w/out any magic being done.

I found David Blaine's magic specials very entertaining, as did most of his viewing audience, at least according to both the New York Times and USA Today.

Almost any of us could be as good as him if we had money like him....not talking about the gimmicked kind either. David Blaine did not become successful because he had money, at least not any more money than most of us have who have regular jobs. David Blaine was working in a resteraunt in New York. He sought out and he subsequently impressed some television executives enough to get an interview. Then he sold them on the idea of his first magic special. He had Paul Harris and two other magicians help him with his show. He had a plan from the start and he pursued that plan. Marvello wrote: Quote:
agreed. I have never heard of him performing live anywhere except for when he is doing a stunt, otherwise it is all just reactions of people and stooges. David Blaine performs live. He was performing magic live in Israel at the end of this August. I've read of other performances since his specials. I also have read that he performed resteraunt magic in New York before he was on television.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

I do like David Blaine.
Judging by the huge crowds he still draws for his endurance stunts, he has rep'd himself very nicely. Now, he is at a turning point where he must grow. Like the protagonist in literature, David must evolve into a larger-than-life magician. He has already set the stage to do so. I can see at least one way he can do this. It will be interesting to see which way he goes with this. If he doen't grow away from the simple tricks and endurance stunts, he will begin to lose his fan base. And this would be a shame. My two cents. Joe Miller

Sure, go to Harlem, find teens, they'll act enthusiastic as heck to be on TV. If you don't think that many people will do back flips to be on tv you are fooling yourself.

That is where he filmed, deal with it. You can set up a camera and tell people that you are looking for reaction shots and you will get him. You can do it in many cities and locations, Harlem, Philly, Cleveland, you know, scummy places like that. I will point out it didn't work for him in Compton, they thought the camera was a large gun. Oh, it also works in the Bahamas as Penn and Teller showed.

Why is it so inportant for you to be insulting to people (and places); is it some sort of power trip or do you just dislike many groups people. I walk through historic Philadelphia several times a week and see hundreds of tourists and their families. Surely they are not there because it is "scummy."

I'm in San Jose, Silicon Valley...not exactly hicks (I'm moving to where there are hicks though). So Blaine didn't shoot in NY? Goodness, that didn't look like Georgia to me.

Of course he shoots in New york, and new yorkers(contrary to your prior statement) aren't phased by a camera crew. Maybe those in georgia will go crazy when they see a camera, but its just not that easy in a town where cameras are around all the time.
