Yeah, I like their theme and how they are made, but they are just so expensive! I should be getting some Victory Cartons soon, I won them almost a year ago and they are finally coming in November.

I would have to agree about the price. For the Haunted House $700+ ? seems VERY high for what you get. The plans/routines for which are available in the well known Mark Wilson book, and can be made at home for very low cost. I am surprised to see it being asked at such a high price. Just my two cents.

To me, this never seemed like one of those illusions that you had to make pack any "flatter." All you had were some folding house pieces and costuming. I think for what it's going to cost you, you might as well buy Mark Wilson's Course On Magic, some plywood, hinges, and cloth, saving yourself a little money, and coming out of it all with a good looking prop (I have my doubts about the overall appearance of the Creative Magic prop) that packs down amazingly flat and will easily fit in your backseat (with room to spare).

I agree. I built one of these when I was 10.

Convenience-wise it is great these are being made; price-wise you'd have to have stupid stamped across your forehead. Even with high priced foam-core board it would be hundreds cheaper, probably lighter in weight and you'd have the satisfaction of having money left in checking.
Let me know when they come out with the cloth-ugly wobbly tip over trunk! That’s the one I’m waiting for. Frank Tougas

Ok we're struggling to see what the point is...
...its taking a prop that packs flat and plays big, sets up instantly and looks logical.... and replaced it with somthing that takes ages to set up, packs bulky & looks cheep :-s

Yeah, I do not quite understand this. I made mine from foam core board for about $40.00 and looks way better then that.

A bit high in price...you're right, maybe if they had some sort of custom airbrushign that could be done on the house to justify such I high price I'd be more understandable...and that ghost costume looks like a KKK starter kit. but they're really nice people though, I met them at the IBM convention this summer in Reno...

Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

As I got shot down in flames the last time I saw an item from this company and suggested that you "could" make it yourself for a fraction of the price, I will not do so again and totally ignore any posts above suggesting just that!

Actually, I thought Nicholas's point was pretty much on the money. I don't think he was trying to bully you, he was sharing his opinion.
It does bring up an interesting point though. I consider the shadow tent to be different enough from a shadow box to be considered a "new" illusion. The effect is the same but just like a zig zag and a thin sawing are similar in effect they are considerd unique enough to be different illusions. Very subjective though as to where one draws that line. |

No matter how flat you pack your plywood, cardboard or fiberboard, it probably won't go on a jet as easily as these products will. You'll pay extra for shipping every time you fly. After a while this will add up to much more than the price of the items. GET IT??????
In the LONG RUN you may "save" some money and headaches.....but to each his own. If you're just doing something at your local High School....Knock yourself out. If you are in a different part of the country each week.....well, that's a little different, isn't it? I do think the prices are a little steep, but then I don't do magic all across the country each week.

You can make your foamboard panels accordian style and reinforce with clips and rods and make it pack just as compact. And it will certainly look a lot better than that graphically challenged tent house. That seems pretty sad for $750. For another $150 get a chalet sub trunk.

I think that any resale shop will have children's toys approximately this same size. I know my kid hade one that was a "puppet theater" and another that was a castle. Exactly the same thing. At some point these folks are stretching the "Packs small, plays big" concept into the arena of "looks tacky." I can't fault them for taking an idea -- that being the cheap nylon structure -- and getting as much mileage as they can from it. I just don't think that we should feel obligated to agree that it's a good idea. Sometimes, when a person says "it sucks" they're right.
Also, I have to respectfully disagree with you, Nicholas. All they did was make the shadow box look different, from a different material. If I made it from canvas stretched over a PVC frame, and decorated it like an outhouse, it would STILL be a shadow box, and anyone could copy it if they wanted. I don't think the concept is "different" enough to call it original. |
