I recently came across a Kaps Smoke from Thumb gimmick in an old box of magic. I am looking for the instructions for this or a DVD or book that has an explaination on how to manipulate it.

If you have the brass one, the booklet that came with the gimmick is worthless. There is a video on Hocus-pocus site if they are still selling the gimmick. Also there is a video on the Fred Kaps site.

Just study these and you will see the way to handle the gimmick. Do a search on the Café and you will find the strings on this. Try Fred Kaps for the search.

I don't have Tom's video's but in his act he no longer does except for special reasons, he uses an Abbott Smoke gimmick. He does not smoke his thumb in his act, but I guess he could have suggested it on a tape. This gimmick is not that good for this type of routine.

Altho Tom Mullica doesn't use it, when Kaps died, he willed the smoking thumb gimmicks (2) to myself and Mullica.

If you have the gimmick, why not just work out a routine - is life that difficult!!!

Best of,

Hi there,

I´m new here, writing messages from Berlin. I try to write in english as good as I can.
My favorite "Smoke from anywhere" Routine is from Finn Jon`s " The imcomoprable Finn Jon"DVD. He uses his own gimmick, it`s also available in magic shops.

Have a nice time,
Stefan from Berlin

The Finn Jon one from the video demo looks too uncomfortable;
there looks to be too many moments where you hold your hands wrong or look uncomfortable.

For example, when he puts the spoon in his mouth- he doesn't just put it in his mouth he does this strange looking thing

I couldn't agree more. I just got this for Christmas and I'm having a hard time with what they are saying. I watched the demo to try to put the pieces together with the booklet and just cant pick it up. If anyone could please send me a PM to help me out I would be very greatful. Thanks.

Ok, just watched the video a few more times and it was a little clearer but I'm not sure of the exact moment he ditches it. I have pretty much figured out everything else now. I guess I just need help with the manipulation now.

Where and when you ditch something in manipulation magic depends on your act an the flow of the act.

Kaps told me the reason his smoking thumb routine works as it does was because he was a BETTER MANIPULATOR than anyone else.

The KEY to his routine is how he handles the gimmick, when he ditches and retrieves it.

There is another SUPER SUBTLE point in the routine that you must discover yourself by watching him perform. It goes by 99% of those that see or try it.

I won't tip because I was asked not to by Kaps.

Yes, I agree with you Pete. They need to make the effort to learn.
