What do you think are the best books (value wise) for someone just starting in gospel magic? I know David Ginn has written several, what are some others, and possibly their sources?

Steve, from a business standpoint with magic in ministry you will want to acquire any works from Toby Travis. I am sure there is some good stuff out there if you go check out FCM (Fellowship of Christian Magicians). I know of some other material too on presentation, but they slip my mind at the moment.

There are many books and booklets for the beginning Gospel Magician. Here are a few...
Gospel Magic 101 by (myself) 50 Magic Object lessons by Rev. Sherman Epler Any of the "12 Gospel Tricks" series by Del Wilson. And there are many more. A great book on the history of Gospel Magic is Greater Gospel Magic by Duane Laflin. Hope this helps, In HIS service, Steve Varro International FCM president

Hey look it’s Steve Varro....
International President of The Fellowship of Christian Magicians Everyone welcome Steve! He would be a great man for this posting area on a regular basis (hint, hint). Welcome Steve! How’s it going? Thanks Steve..... Duane Laflin is who I was going to recommend. My brain was clogged and couldn’t remember his name for nothing! |

An old booklet, David Hoye’s (yes, THAT David Hoye) "Magic with a Message" is excellent. Walley Grant of the Child Evangelism Fellowship has a nice booklet as well, and don’t forget "Spiritual applications for Tarbell." But, of course, the very best way to come up with gospel routines is to read THE BIBLE! Think about what effects you already know or own that can be used to illustrate Scripture. Same goes for ventriloquism routines.

Thank you for making me feel welcomed. Now if I could only figure out how to add those little smileys to my postings.
I’m very pleased with the postings in this "Good News" section and look forward to seeing it grow. Books have always been the best value in magic. When you buy a trick you get one trick, but when you buy a book you get many tricks and ideas. Something I hope we don’t overlook is the area of lecture notes. There are many FCM and other Christian Ministries conferences taking place around the country. The lecturers and workshop leaders often offer lecture notes. These notes are great resources that are only available to those attending the lecture so support your local conferences and lecturers. In HIS service, Steve Varro International FCM President

Good point Steve, I always buy at least one set of notes at a lecture... they need to eat too!
As far as the "smilies" are concerned, just "click" on the one you want to use! There is more info in the FAQ area, and some other info in the Welcome to the Cafe areas as well. So... smile on! _________________ Life is not a problem to be solved... but a mystery to be lived.

OK, I’ll try to add a smiley to this note and see if it works....
I guess it didn’t work. Maybe it isn’t compatable with a Macintosh system. Oh well! In HIS service, Steve Varro International FCM President

Let me add a name to the great list that’s being created here.
Gospel magician Barney Kinard has a 3 hour lecture called the Trick Brain. He presented it to our LA Chapter of the FCM last month. It was fantastic. In his lecture, he teaches you how to catalog all your magic tricks by basic types (illusion, close-up etc), then by effect (production, vanish, penetration etc), create symbols to represent each one, and then how to find scriptures that each effect will apply to. Well, that may have been unclear to you, but let me say that after hearing Barney, I’m better prepared to read a text and know which of my tricks I can use to explain the message. He also shows you codes and symbols that you can make next to Bible verses to tell you which tricks would go with the verse. Now when a Pastor tells you to have a magic trick ready to go with a scripture lesson he has picked out, your face won’t do this, instead it will go Check him out at: Rev. I want to add a book to this list, that is not really magic, but is IMHO a book worth having if you do ballooning.
Shape-shifting Gospel Balloon Creations by Eric Gagnon. This book is gold! Comes complete with Bible Lessons, over 150 Photos and step by step instructions. I have a few of Ralphs books and John's videos, which are nice, but this book is different and will set you apart, as far as balloons go. Just my two Pennies worth Kevin |

Not that there aren't good Gospel Magic resources, but too many times I've found Gospel performances that were more method in search of a message than the other way around.
Like Scott said, if you're truly looking for inspiration for more inspirational magic the place to begin is the Bible. Search the Word then look for the method or effect that best expresses what you're trying to demonstrate and I believe you'll best increase your odds for success. |

Eric Reamer is a Christian Illusionist with a good site at:
http://www.illustratedillusions.com He has a lot of good stuff. Check out his site. ___________________________________________ What do you think are the best books (value wise) for someone just starting in gospel magic? ____________________________________________ Since the topic wasn't just Gospel magic books, I would add: "Mark Wilsons, Complete Course in Magic" which all new magicians should have, it is a wealth of information on all types of magic and if you check the used bookstores you can pick it up for from $5.00 to $15.00. and "Clown Magic" by David Ginn, I know he's already been mentioned, but because of the "Title" I thought some people might tend to overlook it. I have gotten many good ideas from it (can you tell who my audience generally is?) There are things that can be adapted to adults too though. There are many more, but those are the two that I would definitely recommend to beginners. Steve P.S. Love them smileys |

Greetings.
If this is not an acceptable post here, I will remove it no problems, but am pretty excited so I had to put it somewhere. Just wanted to let you all know of a book that I just finished writing. It is called, "The Foolishness of the Cross," and is Christian presentations for effects from "Magic for Dummies." Much like Miller's book for Tarbell 1 and 2, this book doesn't include any effects. Rather, since Magic for Dummies did so well with their selections, this is a book giving ideas and routines for the majority of the effects found in that book. What I like about the book is that it takes a very available resource for any interested (Magic for Dummies), and gives them tools for presenting Gospel based performances. If you are interested in finding out more, cost, etc, contact me at pastorjohn@mora-stevens.com |

A few oldies I've enjoy are:
Magical Object Messages, by Rev. J.B. M Maxwell Mental Effects for the Gospel Worker, by Charles W.Cagle A series of books call "Magical Gospel Lessons", by Rev Lawence Burden "Lessons in Scripture", by Rev. Donald Bodley Of course Joseph White didn't stay with it, but he had some good ideas in "Magic with a Heavenly Touch" Carl Westphal put out a series of paper tearing trick talks that were very well done.

Greetings,
I am looking for feedback on "Greater Gospel Magic." Is it a good resource to have for routines? Thanks in advance for your help!
