Some fantastic psudo hypnosis stunts can be performed without the trance. The encylopedia of impromptu magic has a great thing where a few people lift a spectator with their finers alone.
These can almost duplicate the fantastic reaction of the body catalapsy.

While I don't want a bunch of arguements about all hypnosis being psudo..... I am curious about how many of these demos and what type anyone else knows of, I can think of a lot but I bet it is nowhere near all.

Thanks in advance for the help.

There is a nice one wherein the participant cannot get the deck of cards out of the case due to your "suggestion" that they won't budge. Then, you cancel the suggestion and let the participant take half the cards out. Then "re-hypnotize" and they can't get the remaining cards out of the case. You cancel the "trance" and let them take some more cards out, leaving only a quarter of a deck in the case...and, once again, due to your "suggestion," they cannot get the remaining cards out of the case. Finally, you suggest that they will be able to remove all the cards but one. They do so...and are unable to remove the last card. This is called "Budge" by David Harkey.

You will find a good one in Marvin Kaye's Handbook of Mental Magic (out of print, I think, but still around used) and Scarne's Magic Tricks contains about 5. The Kaye stunt has one person touch the first finger of each hand together, as if each fist is pointing at the other, in front of their chest. Another person, "hypnotized" cannot pull the two hands apart by grasping the wrists and applying steady pressure. Scarne includes the one you see used by the "stop smoking" type hypnotists for publicity pictures, the one where you stretch a person between two chairs, with only their head and feet resting on the chairs, yet they are rigid enough that you can stand on the person.

As a psychology major I learned a little hypnotism. The pseudo stuff can be just as entertaining.

Another simple one is used by the "positive thinking" and "eat healthy" snake-oil salesmen. Have a person hold one arm straight out from their side. Put your hand on their arm above the shoulder and try to push the arm down to their side. Give a real push, the person can resist. Then have the person engage in whatever behavior you are preaching against, like eating a candy bar, listen to negative talk, etc. Have them raise the hand again and push down on the wrist. Down goes the arm. I didn't exactly give away a secret here, but if you follow my directions exactly, it looks good.

Some more resources include:
"Encyclopedia of stage hypnotism", "Real Mental Magic" and "How to produce miracles" by Ormond Mcgill.
"Hypno-Tricks" by Jonathan Royle.
"Building Blocks" and "7 deceptions" by Luke Jermay.
"Body Magic" by John Fisher.
"Sleight Of Mind" by Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup.
"How To Be a Fake Kreskin" by, guess who, Kreskin.
These books include effects that incorporate suggestions with mental magic and feats.

Good luck finding a copy of Body Magic by John Fisher. It is currently out of print and, if you can even find one, they usually go for a starting price of about $75 US.

I am waiting patiently for a book by that Darrow guy mentioned above.

I hope he will reduce it all the way down to regular price for me!

Scott and I will be starting work on this after tax time. It will include real world demonstrations of several different routines, including one that I have been asked about repeatedly - Kathy's Screwy Finger Routine (which dates back considerably further than Jim Ryan's daughter Kathy, I hasten to add) and will then be followed by a taching section that will include all of the work and psychology on how to present these effects.

The real world stuff will be REAL world, not hired hands who have been told to play up to the camera and there might even be a bonus section on a couple of our pet effects that are non-hypnotic as well, just for fun.

More to follow as we develop the project further.

However - out of curiosity (and a sense of playing to the market) - what would YOU folks like to see on this thing? We're somewhat open to suggestions (pardon the pun).

I would like to see something easy enough for beginners to use.

Thanks

I would like to see effects that Kreskin never released... I personally love the power of suggestion, because it can really make miracles happen. How about effects that incorporate hypnosis but does not rely on stage or large croud settings, but a more intimate environment? I would like to see effects that induces trance and even heavy hypnosis states without long scripts. For those who didn't like Kentonism so much...
Something like a neo Mcgill-Kreksin book.

I can't agree more Hypnotize. My audiences here where I work I need things to work fast. The owner doesn't like me to draw things out when I go on stage. Of course, when I do an actual stage show, it is all up to me. But usually I go up between band breaks and another entertainer is after me.

CLoseup effects are my main search now. I have the book Fun with Hypnosis ordered and I have briefed the contants already and there should be at least one or two quickies from what I gather in there.

Danny, this is an effect of mine I worked on last August. Hope you like it ...

It's worthwhile taking a look at the restaurant objects directly in front of you, responding, "Very well ..." & seeing what the possibilites are.

About a year ago I found myself in such a position - I took a bread roll from my side plate, asked one of my friends to hold it under the table & to think of a letter from the Greek alphabet. Her name was Alice, & she did this with a curious half-smile on her face.

I proceeded to use a handshake induction on the character to my left, and ended up lowering his forehead to the table, where he stayed.

I asked the girl with the bread, to find what number in the alaphbet her Greek letter corresponded to, and asked her to pass the roll around beneath the table. I turned my back and she indicated to the other diners when the roll had been passed the number of times she was thinking & stopped there.

With my back still turned I asked whoever had the roll to bring it to the table, break it, & butter it. At this point the main course arrived & there was a 20 minute interval in the proceedings. Gregory, was relieved from his trance to eat, & after the plates were removed I used an anchor to re-induce the trance and he was lowered to the table again.

Anushka, who had buttered the roll, had nursed it on her lap. I asked her to pass it to me. I held the roll to Gregory's tranced face. I said, "Gregory, who buttered this roll?" With his eyes still closed he replied "Anushka" & then proceeded to reveal the number of times it was passed and the original Greek letter Alice was thinking of, even though it seemed there was no logical way he could have known those details.

A dancing sea of cheers & applause poured forth.
I'd be happy to post the mechanics of this effect in Inner Thoughts if need be.
