Quick question on the Hershey Kiss card - anyone know if the cards are specially printed, or am I going to have to attempt some artistic creativity and PAINT the design? Quote:
How about you attempt some artistic creativity and come up with your own idea. It will play much better for you and you will have something to call your own. Unless Cyril has published his ideas I don't believe it is yours to take. Reference some of the posts by Greg Arce earlier in this thread for similar concerns voiced by him. As you can see, this is the fear I had... individuals who only want to take what they see instead of trying to work on their own ideas. It's a shame and it will never end. Greg

Greg,
I see your concern. It seems that not matter how many times you repeat something, there are those out there who just don't pay attention or just don't care. Will |

I just spoke with Cyril... he's too busy creating to get involved with all this mess... good for him. I'm sure the show he is working on will be as cool and original as the others.
I'm going to take his lead and completely stay out of this from now on. Good luck to all those that try to be original. Greg

Okay, guys, sorry to offend . . . I'm not trying to "steal" ideas . . . truth is, it's an incredible effect, and I was wondering if the cards were pre-printed, as I'd like to perform it. Of course, it never crossed your mind that I might try to contact Cyril's team and seek permission . . . . Secondly, since you have no idea who I am, how long I've been doing magic, or what - if anything - I've created on my own, it's rather rude and presumptuous to welcome a newcomer to the board in this way. Hopefully not everyone here at the Café is as judgemental as the two of you have been. . . .

Sorry for jumping to conclusions. Just seemed to me if you wanted to ask permission of Cyril's team you would have done that rather than asking us if we know how to make it up. Without jumping to any conclusions I based my comments on your actual actions. I think I will bow out too at this point.

Hi TribbieSt,
Welcome to the Café, I'm sure you will find your stay here an enjoyable one. You'll find that as a whole the Café members are keen to keep secrets secret but are very helpful in offering ideas, resources and solutions...after a while of posting you tend to get a feel for what or how to ask....don't take offense at the above posts the members concerned are just trying to protect other magicians and their income. I guess the way to look at it would be in a musical scenario....if you play a whole song you are required to pay royalties, if you learned a few phrases that you like and incorperate them into a song you are writing that's a whole different ball game ;-D Looking forward to hearing about some of your ideas and routines...enjoy your stay. Thanks . . . again, though, had anyone actually *read* the post, they would have noticed that I merely asked if the "Hershey Kiss" cards were pre-printed, and did not request the workings of the routine. This is not exposure, as I'm not asking how the trick was done. What I'm seeking to do is purchase the pre-printed cards - *if available* - to incorporate them into my own routine. If they aren't available, I was going to attempt to paint my own. However, as I believe I also mentioned, my drawing/painting skills lack, so professionally manufactured ones would be much better. Thanks again.

Let's take a different tact on this. You want a playign card with a "hersey's kiss" printed on it?

Personally I like WATCHING the guy. That is basically why I pondered about him coming to the states. Greg I feel your pain But like you say it is going to happen its inevitable. "Imitation is the Highest form of Flattery" it will happen and in certain aspects it is sad. But I would just like to watch the guy perform. I do feel that magi's should be creative. But like the effect with the Kiss.. I liked that effect and did wish I could do it.. But I don't think I would do it. UNLESS he decided to market it.

Tribbie,
If you're really gun ho about doing this routine and since you can't draw very well (you said so not I)- might I suggest tracing? Since you said you wanted to paint your own. http://spazrats.tripod.com/hersheykiss.gif http://www.bucknell.edu/img/assets/7056/kiss.jpg http://www.geezer.com/images/item/25633_img.jpg I never thought it would be difficult to draw a hershey kiss, but alas. Or you could just do cut outs of the pictures and slap some glue on a blank card. Jonathan- no it wasn't the misspelling; can't quite put my finger on what was so comical. I'll have to ponder it and I'll get back to you. All this talk about chocolate makes me hungry. Gotta go get some chocolate chip cookies. Be back in a tad.... Tomasko

All out! Dang nabbit. And the cookies are stale! Nothing quite like a chewy chocolate chip cookie at 10:43 at night. Try it some time- exhilerating. But anyway- back to the topic at hand...
best regards and goodnight, Matt Tomasko

Imitation is pretty good for pigeons and maybe for apes. We have language and ideas to help us do better. In the arts, and especially in magic, imitation without permission is pretty much an admission that one has no self respect.

Imitation, one of the primary forms of social learning, is fundamental to what is unique about human learning, intelligence, rationality, and culture. The cognitive sciences has recently discovered that imitation is very pervasive even in adulthood, not just a low level, mindless phenomenon. I believe when we imitate, we are not just coping another person; but we interpret and inject our own meaning into whatever we imitate.
