I’ve developed a technique where I can seem to accurately predict what someone is thinking of from a list of around 20 things. These “things” can be anything. Now, a 1 in 20 prediction is pretty impressive but I want to make the effect seem like the odds are 1 in 1000, similar to a book test. Is there a technique in mental magic I should explore that can give a 1-1000 effect but the odds are really only around 1 in 20? A book I should read maybe? I can’t afford to buy every single book test out there and I just want to use this 1 in 20 technique I’ve got to it’s full potential. Any help would be much appreciated.

Larry Becker has a nice effect called "Reflect a Thot" in Stunners Plus. One word out of 500.

Print the list of 20 items over and over in a psuedo random order so that while there is a min distance between duplicate items(like 12), there is still enough randomness to look random?
If they are actual items, have like 20 boxes all with the 20 small items inside, have them select a box and then show a dummy box that has different items claiming they are all different and then proceed to pick a single item out. What are you selecting them from? |

Just thought of this.... Have your 20 items printed on say, 50 sheets, then have another 50 printed with indifferent words... if you force them one of your pages you are fine... stack them either alternating 1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 or 2 blocks of 50,50.....
If you choose 1,1,1,1,1,1 you can ask them to stop you as you discard the sheets on the floor for dramatic effect... If you choose to have 50,50 you can riffle force or if you are feeling gutsy tell them to open the manuscript or what not and hope the the best.... maybe 25,50,25 is a better idea... Did that make sense to anyone else other than me? |

Reflect a thot is great. You can offer money for anybody who finds duplicate words, how cool is that?

Cassidy has some work on this in his Artful mentalism of Bob Cassidy book 2.
See 'Ultimate Mind Trip' (bonus routine). Cheers, Al

I think that the boldness of Hoy is great and way underused. Too much magician's guilt?

Thanks for the tips. They really got me thinking. If I use 20 different photographs as my predictable objects, a picture of say, a glass of water could be could represented by a few words i.e. "glass", "water", "thirsty", "drink", "teetotal". This method combined with an initial force of a list might be what I’m looking for. Cheers!

Don't forget the potential of homonyms, words that sound the same but are spelt differently, i.e. missed and mist.

I also liked Derren Brown's method, bs method as dpe666 put it, where he plainly miscalculated the odds. So if a prediction or guessing is done repeatedly you could work something along the line. "now 1 out of 20 chance is alright, it will get you the money at the tracks but a second time is would be..." and simply start miscalculating so that after a couple of repetitions you are 1 to 100 000s or so.
