A gaff coin is short for a gaffed/faked coin ie. a coin that looks like a real coin, but it is not. A gaffed coin can be a shell, or a copper/silver coin...there is plenty of others.

Webster's dictionary has many defintions including as a noun "gimmick and trick" and as a verb "to fix for the purpose of cheating... gaff the dice." Basically, it's a coin which has been altered in a way that allows deception- two side coin, folding coin, etc.

While you're looking this up, keep an eye out for the definition of "feke" and what the difference is between the two. It's an older distinction, but understanding the diference is a worthwhile exercise.
