Those of you familiar with Rowland's Alpha Series Lecture Notes should understand.
You have one of the two possible outcomes of whatever "experiment" you're doing written on one of the pages. Above it is the "gaffed" page, which is blank. Whatever you've written has a large "squiggle" mark under it. Bring up your assistant. Hold the notebook (sketchpad) up in front of you,pen in hand, look at the person a moment, look up as if deciding. Write your "other" outcome on the gaffed page. Make sure no one can see the pen as you write, so that no discrepancy can be discerned between that and whatever outcome is revealed. Pause for another brief moment. Then, with a look of detrmination, make a large squiggle under what you just wrote, like a multiple underscore. As you write, tip the upper end of the pad forward enough for your pen movement to be seen. Make big motions. Your silent script is "That's my choice and I'm stickin' to it." Now, whatever outcome you reveal has the same "squiggle" under it, which you were seen to write. This reinforces the notion (I think) that whatever they finally see is what you really did write in front of them. Since this effect deals with rather generous 50/50 chances, it might be best to set up for two or three of these to squelch the notion that you made one lucky guess. In this case, I don't think the "squiggle" convincer I mentioned should be used more than once. Cheers, all.
There are many tricks, and many effects, but rarely a Grand Effect. There are many entertainers, but few real magicians. Many technicians, but few artists who use their art to explore their vision. - Derren Brown, Absolute Magic
