I was browsing some stage illusions and loved the shadow tent, but the price of almost 1500 is way too high for me. Would it be possible to make this or not? If you haven't seen it or the video post and I will try to find the link.

All I can say is as someone who does go camping, most tents already have that feature!!!! ;} Even if they are different colors.

I saw this illusion on display at the I.B.M. Convention in Reno. I'm not sure that you could make it yourself because I don't think you will find a tent the right size. Brian South, the owner of Creative Magic, told me that he had these custom made because you won't find a tent in that size.

Nivek, have you thought of a simple Arabian Tent? You can find info in Mark Wilsons complete course in magic. You can make it inexpensively from foam core board.

Oh boy are you getting yourself into getting hung, drawn and quartered by the "You are stealing someone's intellectual property brigade".

(Or maybe it's only me they are after?)

I can see them getting on their high-horses as I type!

 Smile

But back to reality: Certainly you can build anything if you put your mind to it and save thousands!

As with any illusion that you wish to build, start by looking around for something that is close to the illusion that you wish to build, then most of the work will have already been done. You just then need to adapt it to work as a illusion and to better suit your needs and likes.

Failing that, you will have to or maybe it's sometimes better to start from scratch. Yes, it means more work, but you then get exactly what you want in the end.

Good luck and keep building!

Chris.

Right, most tents have that "feature" which make me wonder if it fools people.

Do you mean that the very design of it draws attention to the workings?

I did kind of think that myself.

It would look better (in my option) if it was at least off of the floor on a small wheelable platform. That would eliminate that "pick up the tent and spin it around bit" which to me looks very amature.

Do any of you actually own the shadow tent? I own a shadow tent and can tell you I've never seen a tent in the world that has that "special feature." I don't think you guys know what you're talking about! I'm not sure you know how the illusion works. The tent has two very, very special features that you will not find on other tents. If you own the tent, you know what I'm talking about. There are tents similar to the Shadow Tent size, but it's almost impossible to find one that's taller than it is wider.
While the shadow box effect is basic and easy to build, I can assure you the Shadow Tent is not an ordinary tent as has been specifically designed to perform this illusion plus some hidden features!
Good luck!

Only slightly presumptuous on a magic forum with 99.9% of it's members actually being magicians. Smile

Hidden features? - Is there a Portaloo in there as well? Smile

Admittedly, no, I do not own one, and neither have I worked with one. But I have SEEN and examined one, and know the "secret." So you do have a valid point, dearwiseone, in that working with it gives you a far better understanding of the prop than I possess. As for having the "special feature," it's not the gimmick so much as the method that is apparent in most tents (does that make sense?)

So, do you think it's a "fooler," or more of a surprise for the audience? For example, the "Flash Appearance" is not the most deceptive trick and I think the average person can pretty much figure it out, but it's still a great, fast opener. Do you think the tent is more like that, or has your experience been that it really fools?

Starrpower,
Great questions. The shadow tent definetly fools people. When performed properly, I think the shadow effect is great. While the method is obvious to us, laypeople just do not put the whole process together. By doing a few subtleties such as passing the light past the back of the tent, etc., you can easily prove to a lay audience that nothing fishy is going on.
Also, have you ever seen Mac King perform the shadow tent? He uses it in his show and the way he does it absolutely fools the audience and gets an EXCELLENT reaction from the audience! His presentation is such that it surprises the audience, and never fails to get screams, gasps, and lots of laughter! If you haven't seen it, you have to see his show!
Good luck!

Shrubsole,

Yes your right. Stealing is stealing, whether it is itellectual property or otherwise and people need to say it.

I too have this illusion and I KNOW all the differences between this and an ordinary tent. The creator has these made for him...would he do this if he could just modify existing tents.

There are at least 10 special things that make this illusion deceptive that you will NOT find in ANY tent.

The creator went through a lot of time, experimentation and expense to create this illusion. Copying it is wrong and hurts the magic industry by discouraging builders from creating new effects.

I would recomend that people listen to the advice of people who have at least seen an item before making a judgement. In this case that would include, Kevin James, Mac King, Andrew Mayne, RJE (from this board) and a lot of others. In fact, I have never heard of anyone who has this that is disappointed.

I would love to see Mac do his routine with the tent. He is a comedic genious.

I will admit that I did not explain myself clearly, I was referring to the fact that at night, many tents reveal who is inside and just what they are doing due to the shadows....mu particular post was not intended to speak to the specific workings of the illusion or it's secrets!
