One of the irksome problems with mentalism is that it can't be done without spectator involvement. This makes routining a show difficult. During each and every effect you have to drag some poor *** out of his or here seat, assure him you won't embarrass him, and then send him on his way.
Its a problem. I worry about the rhythm of the show, with all that recruiting and applause and handshaking. There are a few tricks you can do with the guy remaining in his seat. It also occurs to me to bring a committee up on stage, like in a hypnotism show. What do you do? |

I don't see too much difference with parlor magic...but rhythm is always a very important thing in the show.
I for example give the bills and papers for two different tricks near the beginning of the show when people is still a little cold for avoid to go down two times (sometimes go to the audience is not bad if you have something interesting to do, but give papers is not a very funny thing to see). Perhaps you have to do less effects a full your time on stage telling something like a tale, or funny remarks (in my case) Is you know some trick with the spectator in his seat, milk it with audience participation... Be yourself, your opinions, your patter interesting. Surprise them with your comments. If you have a lot of spectators, perhaps you have to forget your more serious and intimate approach in function of the dynamics with the audience. -Step on the applause go to the next effect with real emotion for show incredible things. -The show is you and not the effects by themselves -A good advice that Paul Alberstat gives in his book is to have one hour of interesting patter. Go to clubs and perform Stand Up or go to a speakers corner in the street and try to keep people interested. And we have to keep in mind that a mentalist show needs his conditions as any other show. Too much time of mentalism outdoors, with family audience, next to a working factory or in a club full of drunk people looking for dates it doesn't matter how she look like is like put Abba as soundtrack of the next Steven Seagal's film. Hope this helps |

Zack,
Your problem is actually a blessing. Any effect that does not have audience participation is not much of an effect. BUT, in order to have that participation, it is not necessary to have someone come on stage. The participation in some straight magic is simply in the minds of the audience. Same can be true with mentalism. Peace, Parson
