My father is retired from the airforce. so we hit the BX and PX about once every couple of months. I normally buy their entire stock when I get them.

Wow, the new studs do appear to have a consistancy issue!

Any chance someone can send me a few decks of the new ones if I pay pal them the money plus shipping etc?

Cheers guys

Corey, Is it true that you don't know if you are getting black backs or green backs. My nephew sent me 2 decks and I got one black back and one green back. Did I just get lucky?

You just got lucky. There is no way to tell what you are going to get with the tacticals. I have had one black deck so far out of 43 decks.

When I was in my local Walgreens today, I decided to check out the playing cards, and was stunned to discover they were once again stocking the old style Studs(with the the bright backs. An extra bonus was that one of the packs was printed with a dollar price tag on the case. The only drawbacks: the old style Studs were only available in red and jumbo indexes. Is this just a local phenomena or are the old style Studs back in Walgreens everywhere?

Guy Hollingworth also uses Stud cards - almost exclusive of any other brand of card.

Can I just break the mould here and say that I like the new edition Stud cards as much as I like the old style ones. I spent a week in America watching a pool tournament and made trips to the 4 Walgreens stores that are located nearby, running them out of the Stud stock they had at the time. So, to anyone in the Chesapeake, VA area, sorry to run you out of the old stock!

Best wishes

How can you tell the difference between the old stud cards and the new ones? There are about 8 Walgreens in Vegas, so I might see if there are any around here, though I'm sure living in Vegas, they go through cards faster than most cities.

The new ones have a completly different box. The old boxes are just plain red and white or blue and white. With the new decks the boxes actually have some graphic to it.

Thanks Corey,

I just picked up a couple decks of them. There were about 20 of the old decks at one of the Walgreens I went to. They're pretty good, I might go back and get some more.

Chris, do they feel the same thickness? everyone I know is saying they are thicker...more like bikes?

let me know wot you think?

I have the older ones and the new ones and a bike deck. Both new and old version of the Stud deck seems the same. I like the way they handle better than bikes.
Well, here are the results of some measuring that I performed using a digital micrometer (Mitutoyo) which measures to .00005" or 0.001mm. :
1. Hoyle- .012"
2. Bee (Casino Quality)- .012"
3. WPT (w/ Borders)- .011"
4. Tally Ho (Circle Back)- .011"
5. Bicycle- .011"
6. Stud (Old style)- .010"
7. Stud (New style)- .010"
Personally I prefer the thicker stock, but the Studs are nice and I like how they faro. My Porper clip is too wide to hold those Studs, unless I keep all the ad cards & jokers in the box and it is tight when I put the Hoyles in it. Those Hoyles are thick! Ditto for the Bees.

If only the studs were a diamond back we would have a great card for manip. My biggest problem with the new studs, is the box design. Ugly, tan with the horse on it, makes them look cheap.

It's no surprise that the Bicycle and Tally-Ho decks came in at the same thickness. They're run on virtually identical machines, and are made from the same paper. They also have virtually identical finishes.

I've been told that the only change to the Stud brand was the deeper colors. The paper is supposed to have remained the same.

Incidentally, the Walgreens warehouses apparently have thousands of the "old" studs lying around. They won't be vanishing completely any time soon.

Just like they have always been. and no they are not thick like bikes they are much more plyable. good for springing.

Oh and you can only get tacticals at a military base or ebay. the military bought them just like ellusionist bought the black tigers to sell. and the tacticals also come in green and you don't know what you get untill you open them up.

The first time I ever saw Stud cards was at the Midwest Magic Jubilee 2 or 3 years ago. Chris Korn was using them in is close up routine. I asked him about them and he told me he got them at Wallgreen's and that he loves them. So I got some and have been using them ever since in practice, but I still use Bike's in front of lay people just because they seem more ordinary.

Isn't it a shame they had to change them at all. They should have just left them alone.

Steve

Magic Sailor,

The Tacticals don't have the blood red faces so that you can play with them using Night Vision technologies. They have the blood red faces so that you can play with them using a red flashlight. Otherwise, the normal red faces will wash out under a red light.

Finally ran out of old Studs, and bought a new deck of midnight blue.
Aside from liking the back design (which is the same), I liked old blue Studs because they were *bright*. Vibrant. I kind of like the new midnight blue because it's very very dark, almost black, not Bike's boring medium dark blue.

So... new Studs have the same thickness as old ones, KRZ4kardz? Doesn't feel that way...
+The cut of the cards is rough like Bikes are nowadays, whereas old Studs always seemed to have a higher quality (or more polished) edge to them. These feel "raw".
I miss the 3rd Joker. At least both Jokers are still identical.
The new case design looks more like a pack of cigs; I liked the simple original one.

Nick, If you go back and READ. You will see that when talking about the Black decks. I was talking about the black backed decks that they sell in a pack at walgreens. these are the black decks that they sell at Magicbox.uk.com. I know about the tactical black back decks. My father is retired military and I purchase a dozon of these at a time when I am able to make it to the base. I use tactical decks almost exclusivley. So I know all about them. I don't mean for this to sound like I am trying to be rude. But I wish people on here would actually read a little more before they post about something when it has been stated and reitterated 2 to 3 times.

About 2 months ago I went to Walgreens and they had quite a few of the old decks. I bought 1 pack. I checked last night, and all that they had (besides the pinochle decks) are the new ones (which I have yet to get a deck of. I will soon). Should picked a couple more old decks up...

Well, my local Walgreens finally got some of the new Stud cards in. The twin pack on the old box advertises for 2.98 (or maybe 2.99), and the new box says (1.98, or maybe it was 1.99, whatever). Is this right, or did I read it wrong?

I think I would actually prefer a slightly thicker stud card as the old seems to thin for me. I did not have much time to browse and scrutinize, but the burgundy color looked quite dreadful.
