Hi all
I am working on an appearing gramaphone record player (goes with the theme of my act) and was wondering if anybody has every tried to build one? I have heard of a vanishing gramaphone record player but never an appearing one. I have more than enough cover from a long 'hanky' that I produce (over 10 feet!!!, I could produce a car!!). My theory is to have the body part 'collapse' ala vanishing radio but the 'cone' is giving me some trouble.
Any thoughts would certainly be appreciated.
Regards

Did you ever have a collapse cup (aka camping cup)?

I have been talking to another act about just such a project. PM and give me some idea about your performance limitations and how you view the appearance and such.

Diana Zimmerman had a act with records and gramaphones. I believe the act was built by her ex-husband Dick Zimmerman. They are both still around with Diane concentrating on tradeshow work and Dick playing Ragtime piano. A little net search should turn up emails for them.

Thanks Big Mac - I knew of the Zimmermans but have never seen Diane's act. I will try and contact her.
I have just returned home from a tour across British Columbia with an illusionist and together we worked out a production of a real gramaphone player.
The production of the player comes down to misdirection rather than a gimmicked player, the player doesn't really need to be functional. I will end up producing it on an empty stage away from tables etc.
I found the perfect size and shape old vintage gramophone player so will be working on this routine to add to the show. It just lends itself perfectly to my Charlie Chaplin Act.

Sometimes simple is better. It just takes guts to do the necessary work to make it happen.

Diane's act did appear any gramaphones. She did a vanish and reappearance from a huge gramaphone cone that now is in the Lance Burton show. I just saw Diane at the LA Conference last weekend.

Back to the appearing gramaphone, I did look your pm you sent me. I think you have found the best solution. The only problem with the mechanical method is the cone. I have a couple of ideas but have not had the time to work on them.

Hi Richard,
They are making incredible replica's of gramophone players in India, I actually remember seeing them there when we travelled to India. There are a few places I found in the USA importing them at a resonable price. PM me if you are interested and I'll send you the address.

Acutally, I was working on this same project for another chap and I walked into a closeout store and there was exactly what I was looking for. As you said, imported from India, and really works.

Since I own an original windup victrola with records, I didn't need to buy it to play them on. But I think it was around $45.
